BlackJack II first shots

Its back and with a vengence!
When a sequel is better than the original, it's always cause for a grand entrance, and such is the case with the Samsung BlackJack II ($150 w/contract; end of 2007). This unit improves in nearly every way possible, the new BlackJack II features built-in GPS, AT&T Video Share, Tri-band UMTS/HSDPA and Quad-band EDGE/GPRS, an RSS reader, and the most important feature better battery life, Windows Mobile 6, and a host of other improvements. This is just the first of a few follow-ups of my experience with the BlackJack II which I will add onto during my use.

Front of BlackJack II sporting the bigger screen. You'll also see the AT&T Blackberry Curve 8310 for size comparison.

The keyboard has changed a bit with a ton of more space between keys. I feel so far this keyboard is much easier.. We shall see.

The left side of the BlackJack II sporting a volume control and the power slot.

The right side of the BlackJack II has one slot for the MicroSD card.

The new navigational center is completely redesigned with a nice addition of a multipurpose scroll or click wheel!

The back of the BlackJack II is where you'll find the 2.0 Megapixel camera. The back is also a high glossy back which smudges really easily.. Bad move..

The battery is improved with almost twice the capacity of the original BlackJack..

Played with one today.... I have to say that I am sticking with my 8830. But it's much improved.

I have read in too many places that the BJ2's signal strength is not very good. I have also heard it has difficulty keeping HSDPA connections.

I paired my motorola HT820 with my Blackjack II today and I must say I am very pleased with the outcome. With my previous blackjack, i had to manually change from stereo to headset profiles, not so with the new blackjack, it recognized the headset immeidately and swithced easily between the media player and phone calls.
Now for the most pleasnt surprise of the day. As of today, I am getting 100% signal at home!!!!not sure what has changed over the past day, but since I got the phone I have had horrible signal at home, now all of a sudden it is perfect. I have not seen it switch to EDGE yet today. It may just be a good day but I am keeping track of this one to see if something has actually changed.

At my house I have that problem, with my first blackjack, I consistantly got full 3G coverage, now I get 2 bars at best, until I walk outside then I get full coverage. I work on Boeing Field in Seattle and get perfect coverage there.
On a side note, I used MS Live last night on my trip home and like it much better than google maps, mostly for the traffic option, i get better views of the crapy Seattle traffic than what google gives me.

I hear that the radio on the BJ2 is a bit weak? People that normally would pick up EDGE/HSDPA are now getting GPRS/EDGE respectively. Any observations?

DataViz Documetns to go reg code works on both Standard and pro, just moved it over and it works fine, I have used this in place of the built in office software for various reasons but it is working fine on the BJII.

The only thing I miss so far is my Mapping software, I was using Pharos Ostia on my 8525 and it does not work on the the Blackjack II. I also dont like slingplayer, it just isnt the same.
AS far as using google or MS live, I have used google maps and it seems alright, it isnt as good as some other programs I have used for directions, i will give MS Live a better look and let you know.

Anyone try MS LiveSearch or Google Maps with the GPS?

Tac,
Do you have any apps for your 8525 that you need on your BJ?

Got mine last week, I really like it, except for the shiny casing, which I am constantly wiping clean.
I only wish it had WiFi, AT&T 3G is nice but at my house I have limited 3G coverage 9Renton, WA Seattle has great coverage and is only 12 miles away, that lille bit of milage makes a huge difference) and I would love to have WiFi as a back up. I gave up my 8525 for this device and my only regret is the lack of WiFi.

Went to play with one during lunch today. I really like the scroll wheel on the front. The tactile response of the d-pad felt good to. I actually like the keyboard on the BJ II better than the Treo 750. I (of course) love the slim and svelte form factor.
I like it. Can I live with a WM Std device?
Hey on a little off topic question....has anybody moved from Pro to Standard and needed the same 3rd party apps too? I ask because I wonder if the reg codes from the software house will work on both the Smartphone and the Pro version of the software. Just wanted to hear any experiences people may have had with this.
TIA!
P.S. - Dave, you are right, the back is a fingerprint magnet! :)

If I were to buy a Standard Edition device, this is the one. I have always liked the BJ form factor and now it looks like Samsung made some nice "evolutionary" updates.
