FIRST IMPRESSIONS (rz1700)...

Setting up ActiveSync was a breeze. As soon as I inserted the USB cable, active sync started and there was an immediate connection. I set my options, synced the device and that was all there was to it. Very smooth, no trouble….I still like it!

After synching, I began to surf the net…LANDSCAPE of course. What a different perspective…very nice for those formerly hard pages to read. This one aspect I really like and you will too!

Finally, I decided it was time to read the directions…typical, huh? I opened the shrink-wrapped package, opened the companion CD and inserted it in my computer. There was a nice demo and a myriad of items a first time user would like. There was a nice collection of software for first time user to try and buy if they like, a User's Guide to help you quickly and easily set up your HP iPAQ and make full use of all its features, and a "How Do I..." guide that gives a list of commonly asked questions and answers on how to use your new HP iPAQ.

Overall, this is a nice device, not bad for a starting lineup unit. It appears to handle well with the loaded software and the few programs that I added. I have no question that I’ll put a 256 MG SD card in it and all will be fine…but I’ll always have to check that a program does not write to main memory. It is important to note that the rx1700 series has a 3.5” transflective, TFT QVGA, 64K color display. This means that it will provide you with images that are crisp and very clear. You will find, as I did, that viewing text will be extraordinary (better than any unit I currently have). For those that do not know, transflective display technology combines transmissive and reflective technologies to offer an incredible 64,000+ colors that are very brilliant. In addition, there is a high-contrast ratio with rich color saturation. With the 1700 series, you will experience rich content display and broad application compatibility in either portrait or landscape modes. The lighting levels are adjustable which will allow you to view your iPAQ in virtually any lighting condition.

So first impressions…are lasting impressions. I am impressed with this starting entry in the new HP iPAQ line. But remember, this is a starting entry. If you want a power device…this is NOT the one for you but for those that want a device to do your basic operations; Word, Notes, Calendar, Contacts, Spreadsheets, and possibly a few games or other applications, this is a perfect choice. The added ability to view pictures with HP Image Zone and listen to your favorite music is a plus. I found the speaker to be very good. Of course you have the ability to extend the HP iPAQ Pocket PC's capabilities by adding WLAN cards, cameras, GPS solutions, etc.

I can't really understand hp.
Yes the unit is decent. But it replaces the 19xx series; at a higher pricepoint with less features. I like the new 37xx, the 63xx (ordered one) and the 47xx series. But in the case of 17xx, what on earth are they thinking? 25MB RAM! Sell it at a $170 price point to match the model series, and then you might have an audience. With great respect to all the great pdas hp has produced the last four yars, this one is out of place. There I said it...
I refuse to believe we can't get at least a 2-3 Mega pix out of the camera portion.
I can't disagree with your thoughts. What I can say is that so far my testing of the unit has shown that it works well with what I have installed. I do, however, make sure that there is little(if anything) running in the background.
And it seems they see these new first time users coming. I don't think it's the specs that are the problem, just the ridiculous price they are asking for it ie $279! The new Dell Axims were a bargain before this, now this makes it look like they are giving them away! This device should be $199 not $279. For this price they should have at least increased the memory to 64MB since 32MB is not a lot for a Pocket PC even if you are a light user.
Thanks Ed, I appreciate the nice comment. I really believe that HP made this product for the "first time" user. The person that just wants basic functionality. Just wait...the best is yet to come!
Well stated review, but I'm disappointed with HP's lack of evolution with this product. Smaller memory, slower cpu. Regress instead of progress. Why would one bother?
Great review! I appreciate seeing your comments about how it operated in landscape mode, and the fact your tried out some apps on it. Memory....hmmmm...always an issue.
Since when has hp said mid range? Are there cameras all mid-high, not at all..
definately this is starter pack compare the whole of others in pda but the HP is not the starter range. it is mid range. just ridiculous.
