Re: musicaldirector, Saturday, Oct. 8th, 2005, email question, "I can receive email but when I reply to sender I get a message in my ibox telling me that this is a ivalid address, even when I send it to my other email account I am using a IMAP4 account." I hope I'm not too late to help.
I have the same problem on my Windows XP computer, for complex reasons simultaneously using an Outlook and a Firefox browser on an IMAP account. I appear to get this error when sending mail from Firefox if Outlook was the last browser to contact the IMAP server (doing an automated message retrieval). My workaround is to compact the IMAP folders from Firefox (just doing a message retrieval isn't sufficient). Then I can send email from it without errors until the next time this happens.

So does anyone know if there are any sync patches for a windows mobile 5 device such as this to sync with a MAC running OS 10+?? The markspace site said that as of yet there is no 'missing sync' patch software for this device/Windows Mobile 5...

USB Sync & Charge? Is it possible via USB Port?
I just bought my JJ and haven't put my hands on it. So pardon my ignorance, but can it be charged via its mini USB slot? The reason I ask is because I saw many sites advertising Lil'Sync cables for charge & sync. When looking closer I noticed that had a PDA2K type connector on one end and a regular USB on the other?
Any comments?
Cheers

Great review, looks like a great device. Had been considering a Nokia 9300 but this may trump that. Unfortunately, one potential deal maker or breaker. Is there a Blackberry client software available for Windows Mobile Pocket or the JasJar?
Thanks.

Long time reader first time poster ;-)
Does anyone know which screen protector (those foil things) to use for the Qtek9000/i-mate jasjar? I have placed order today and would like to protect the screen as soon as I get it. But I havenīt been able to find screen measurements other than 3,6". And what brand?
Also Iīm a bit worried about virus protection and firewall. Any suggestions?
Thanks for a great site :-)

I bought one and use it with my Cingluar account. I have travelled all over the East Coast and as far West as Las Vegas. I have yet to have problems with connectivity. Pocket Informant now works for the v5 software, so it is a real productivity powerhouse. I set up our MS Exchange system to synch over the internet and it works great. I can't say enough good things about this unit. The fact that you can charge via a USB cable is awesome! It's the same cable I use for my portable 100BG Seagate drive, so I don't have to worry about yet another charger.

Yum.
Ever since this came out, man, I have been salivating.
Right now, the plan is a Nokia 6260 with the Universal riding shotgun. With USB host - oh, man. No more storage worries.
Keep my Cingular line as my primary number, and open a T-Mobile line that for the "Jazzy"; their data is mucho cheaper, anyway.
Sweetness.

dkb218,
I totally agree. Given the restrictions on using this device in the USA (or abroad with an American SIM card), the price is way out of line. IF you lived in Germany, you could pick up T-Mobile's locked version of the JasJar, the MDA Pro, for only $600 on a two-year Relax-100 contract (about $30/month with 100 included minutes). And you could actually use the 2100-MHz UMTS networks being built throughout Europe!
I'm just hoping HTC will offer an American version of this device with 850/1900-MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE capability for use here, and 900/1800-MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE capability for use abroad.
Cingular is busy right now expanding the UMTS network they inherited from AT&T from 6 cities to something like 18-20. It looks like we'll eventually need 850/1900/2100-MHz UMTS compatibility, too.

I like this PPC and want to replace my 6315 but $1300!!! Come on! Does the thing cook and wash the dishes?

Is it just me, or does it seem strange that the Jasjar which is pitched as the "data" device only has 802.11b capability, but the k-jam, their "messaging" device, has 802.11b/g support? Has anyone heard if there will be flash upgrades to support 802.11g on the Jasjar?

Deja Vu? I would like to see the JASJAR side by side with the HP200LX. It makes me wonder why HP couldn't have created a phone like that 10 years ago. Would it have been so evolutionary to make the 200LX run Windows Mobile (400LX?) and then add wireless (500LX?) and then a phone (600LX?)?? Why did it take 10 years for another vendor to create a product like we almost had 10 years ago?

Yes you can turn on flight mode, by tapping the signal icon. I hope some one can help me with a email problem that I have, I can receive email but when I reply to sender I get a message in my ibox telling me that this is a ivalid address, even when I send it to my other email account I am using a IMAP4 account

I can't speak for the i-mate JasJar, but assuming it has the same features as T-Mobile's version of the HTC Universal, the MDA Pro, then: yes, you can turn off all the radios inflight, in order to use the device strictly as a mini-notebook computer.
See "Flugmodus" (in German), on pages 38-39 of the MDA Pro User's Manual:

Does anyone know if this phone would allow you to turn off the cell phone part of the phone but still be able to use the other features like the MP3 or the Pocket Office Apps?
The reason for this is due to the fact that a lot of people travel, and you are not permitted to use your cell phone on the planes. So, if you have work that needs to be done, or you just want to listen to the MP3 part can you turn off the cell part so no calls will come through to you.

Looks great, can it handle GPS (maybe through the USB slot) and does it have a car cradle?

The HP case for the IPAQ 5550 is a good for for the Jasjar and is an excellent case.
Rich.
p.s. environmentally friendly to recycle like that, too!

pkellner,
Unfortunately the JasJar is not EDGE-compatible, so it will not work with T-Mobile's 1900-MHz EDGE-network, once T-Mobile finally gets it rolled out in the USA.
The JasJar's UMTS band at 2100 MHz will not work at all in the USA, since that band is used here for satellite transmissions. It would, theoretically, work in Europe/Asia on their 2100-MHz UMTS-networks, except T-Mobile USA doesn't offer international roaming with UMTS (since T-Mobile doesn't have a UMTS-network in the USA, it can't reciprocate with foreign UMTS-providers). To use the JasJar as a UMTS-device in Europe/Asia, you would have to get a European/Asian SIM- or USIM-card authorized for use on UMTS-networks.
So, provided your SIM-card from T-Mobile USA is authorized for international roaming, you can use the JasJar for GSM/GPRS service in North America at 1900 MHz and in Europe/Asia at 900/1800 MHz. As you seem to be suggesting, for data-transfer rates faster than GPRS, you would need to use WiFi.
It would be great, if HTC were to eventually offer a US-version of this device with 850-MHz AND 1900-MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE-capability. The HTC Wizard to arrive shortly will be fully compatible with our networks here, but has a slower processor (200 MHz vs. 520 MHz), a smaller display (2.8" vs. 3.6") and lower resolution (320x240 vs. 640x480 Pixels).

Looks like an awesome device. A little to rich for my blood. You could be up to $1,600 when you get done because of extra software and accesories. for that price I would rather put in a few more bucks, keep my cell and get a oqo. Then I would have a full os. No syncing because you've got your pc right there.

Will the JasJar ever support the cellular datanetworks here in the United States, or is this a dead end device here that is just good for wifi and cell phone converstations?

I agree with every thing that you say in this review, I have had my jasjar for two weeeks from mobilefun.co.uk, and it has opened new avenues for me, when I am on the road. This is the first time that I have used a windows mobile enabled device as my previous device was a nokia 9500. As you said in your review the camera could of been a 2mega pixel as this seems to be the standard with new phones. I have got to say that my faverite part of the device is the voice recognition and the added software. I actually signed up on this site last night using my jasjar and my home wifi and the site really works well on the device.

Dave, great review, I got my JasJar at PDC last week.by the way There is a beta of Pocket informant available, looks impressive. do you know a registry editor which works ?

it is Active Sync 4.0. I called US Expansys and they want me to ship back the unit for replacement but they did not reply when i ask them who will pay the shipment. So I am still waiting their reply.
also, have you noticed the slow boot when powering up the unit, comparing my i-jam it is faster, is this beacuse of the E-TRUST ANTI_VIRUS? please confirm.

I am glad to hear that you can do Voice Command on Bluetooth headset! I would like to know if anyone knows if this device, when it comes to the states, will have both CDMA versions as well as GPRS? I look at the PPC 6600 and think that the JasJar device must have opportunity to be both a GPRS and a CDMA. Can anyone confirm this? From the sounds of it Dave this is the device to have, the one I have dreamed about for many years. Thanks for the review.

The JasJar runs on the 900/1800/1900 MHz bands. It does not have 850 MHz. Cingular uses both bands in many areas of the country since they bought AT&T a while ago (including my area). T-Mobile runs only on 1900 MHz in the US.
The 3G unfortunately won't work in the US either, since it uses a different band than ours.

Actually Cingular hasnt truly rolled out the 850mhz network.. I dont think i said it wouldnt work but the reception would be spotty.
|
|
Dave, great review.
One thing I wanted some clarification on was this statement:
I went with T-Mobile for this device since it
does support 850mhz so Cingular customers be
careful since coverage will be spotty (Cingular
doesn't support 850mhz).
According to the specs on the last page, it is a tri-band phone, and the 850MHz isn't listed. Also, even though Cingular doesn't have support for the 850MHz, with the acquisition of AT&T wireless, the 850MHz spectrum is now part of Cingular's makeup, which gives me service with my SX66.
Perhaps I just haven't had enough sleep yet and I'm misunderstanding the review. Please help me. :)

I also have a JasJar (after smashing the screen on my 6515.
I like it a lot, but need a case that I can put on my belt.
I also was unable to get Good link working correctly. It loaded and functioned fine but for some reason would not initiate a GPRS date link to synch, so I had to initiate manually to synch by opening Internet Explorer. Good link tried to help, but until the device is tested by them they could not fix the problem.
I am now using server activesync.

Great review dave, only downside to me so far is the uninspiring contacts and calender applications, and the lack of wm5.0 3rd party software available, i guess that the price you pay for being in first. :)
I would like to shoot a video of how fast the 3g network works for downloads and web pages, where should i post it

Wow like already said thx for the review.
I've been looking forward to this device for awhile, that or the hw67**. This is a dream device, only shame it doesn't have a built in GPS receiver. Now that would have made it complete..
We have 3G network in Australia and Vodaphone testing an additional 3G network so hoping this type of device is released here. The current $1,500+ AUS is a bit rich for my blood.

Very weird Steve you got me on that.. We might have Imate on the podcast so that would be a great question.
|
|
I am basing this on the information found here http://www.gsmworld.com/technology/gprs/class.shtml When we were talking you mentioned that you can recieved a call and were able to talk while you were surfing the internet. Based on that it sounds to me as if the unit has a Class A radio.
The class indicates the mobile phone capabilities.
Class A
Class A mobile phones can be connected to both GPRS and GSM services simultaneously.
Class B
Class B mobile phones can be attached to both GPRS and GSM services, using one service at a time. Class B enables making or receiving a voice call, or sending/receiving an SMS during a GPRS connection. During voice calls or SMS, GPRS services are suspended and then resumed automatically after the call or SMS session has ended.
Class C
Class C mobile phones are attached to either GPRS or GSM voice service. You need to switch manually between services.

Great review Dave, and thanks for the link to WM5 from Jack. Steve, I am a little confused, you keep mentioning that the Jasjar has a Class A GPRS radio, but Dave's specs and the specs on the i-mate site: http://www.imate.com/JASJAR_technical.htm state that the device has a Class B GPRS radio. I think Dave should correct his specs and i-mate should be informed so they can change theirs. For i-mate its false advertising at the worst, and at the least they are missing a pretty good selling point by advertising a less functional GPRS radio.

I agree with Steve on the case issue. Besides, from the looks of things it might fit in my h6315 stock case... but I am not sure. As for the price, since no company in the US is offering this phone (mostly because we don't have a 3G network for it, YET) I don't see the problem with spending the cash for a device that will do everything you want and more. I never did put much into the camera or video features on mobile phones. If I want quality pictures I will get an Digital SLR Camera, and if I was great video they don't cost that much anymore. But if I want a phone that can be used to replace my laptop.. then I think the I-Mate JasJar sounds like the device for me! Thanks for the review Dave, I look forward to getting mine, very soon!

Dave,
Nice review. This looks like a great device. I like the fact that it has a class A radio so you can talk and surf the net at the same time. I don't worry to much about factory cases it seems this is one area in which the OEM's don't put much thought into. I would rather spend the extra $$$ on a good quality case.
