PowerCerv Corporation Announces Letter of Intent to Acquire Search Play, LLC

TAMPA, Fla., Apr 25, 2005 (BUSINESS WIRE) — PowerCerv Corporation (Pink Sheets:PCRV) announces the signing of a non binding letter of intent to acquire Search Play, LLC. The acquisition will include soundpass and all intellectual property associated with these businesses.

Search Play, LLC currently operates radioio.com, a 15 channel genre-bending, cutting edge internet radio group that last month was rated #5 among all internet radio providers. Its channels are listed in several directories including Windows Media Guide, Apple iTunes, Real Media Guide, etc., and has been chosen by several digital media devices such as Phillips Streamline, Roku Soundbridge, and Escient Fireball for inclusion as a preset because of its premium quality content and the reliability of delivery via its robust streaming network.

Search Play, LLC also incorporates a diverse pending intellectual property estate that allows for the operation of a search engine inside a media player. Search Play is currently capitalizing on its IP estate by offering a search engine in its radioio offering. With 18 million searches in March, this is an extremely fast growing segment of the business and Search Play looks to capitalize on this as an immediate revenue stream.

“The internet radio audience has grown 500% in five years and it’s continuing to expand,” noted John Stanton, Chairman and CEO of PowerCerv, “20 million people listen to internet radio weekly, making internet radio ten times larger than satellite radio. The upside revenue potential from both traditional radio advertising, subscriptions, and internet advertising in combination with the proprietary `searchPlayer’ search revenue business method and technology represents a tremendous opportunity for PowerCerv Corp.”

“Since beginning this project in a spare bedroom five years ago, I have always believed that internet radio is the future of radio – and radioio is uniquely positioned to very quickly become a dominating force in this space and this future,” said Michael Roe, Founder of Radioio. “We believe that the proposed transaction is the logical next step for our business. We’re very excited. There’s lots of interest in internet radio in general, and this project specifically.”

About Dr. Agatston and The South Beach Diet

Arthur Agatston, M.D., is a cardiologist and an associate professor of medicine at the University of Miami Medical School. His pioneering work in noninvasive cardiac imaging has resulted in computerized tomography scanning methods and measures that bear his name: the Agatston Score and the Agatston Method, which are used for screening coronary calcium, are recognized worldwide.

Dr. Agatston did not set out to develop a weight-loss plan. His goal was to help his chronically overweight heart patients get their diets under control, thereby preventing or reversing the myriad of heart and vascular problems associated with obesity. Knowing that his patients weren’t faring well on the standard, low-fat American Heart Association diet, Dr. Agatston began to investigate diets and the origins of insulin resistance on his own. The result was The South Beach Diet, The South Beach Diet Cookbook, and The South Beach Diet Good Fats/Good Carbs Guide published by Rodale Inc.

Worlds First Wireless Broadband Internet On A High-Speed Train

A stable Wi-Fi broadband internet connection via satellite was successfully tested aboard a high-speed train – the Paris-Brussels route operated by Thalys. The record bandwidth attained was 4 Mbit/s downstream and 2 upstream at 300 km/h, comparable to the quality of an ADSL+ (asymmetric digital subscriber line plus) connection, a faster variant of DSL. This test was made possible with support from ESA (European Space Agency) and was implemented by the Anglo-Belgian operator 21Net with Siemens as technology partner. Siemens integrated the wireless broadband Wi-Fi network in the passenger cars and provided the complete management system including authentication and billing.

The new satellite link on the Thalys high-speed train offers business people, train personnel and private travelers a fast and stable opportunity to surf the internet while traveling at more than 300 km/h. The link between the train and satellite has a bandwidth of a maximum of 4 Mbit/s downstream and 2 upstream, comparable to the quality of an ADSL+ connection – an ADSL technology which effectively doubles the downstream bandwidth available for services – and offers numerous business and entertainment applications. Thalys has hereby set a new record.

21Net got the order from Thalys to implement the test installation. 21Net chose Siemens as its partner for integrating a wireless broadband Wi-Fi network in the passenger cars. Siemens used the Garderos operational support system for authentication and billing and operates the system on behalf of 21Net.

The pilot project will run for a period of three months on one train only. If proven successful, Thalys will equip its entire fleet of 28 trains running on the Brussels-Paris route with super fast internet.

The principle behind the solution is technologically complex but extremely user friendly at the same time. When paying for a seat, each passenger receives a password and ID for logging on to the wireless broadband interconnection. As soon as the passenger logs on, the authentication information is sent to the central Network Operations Center (NOC) of Siemens Belgium via satellite.

The NOC houses the Network Management Center where Siemens manages the authentication of users for 21Net and assimilates the time-based billing data. To this end Siemens collaborates with Garderos, a German company that makes WLAN infrastructure software for operational support systems. What is more, the center manages all components on the train remotely. The first-line helpdesk for users is operated by 21Net. Siemens staffs the system helpdesk that intervenes at network level.

An additional benefit to 21Net was the railway expertise of the Siemens “Energy Industry Transport” department in Belgium that designed the special racks for the servers and configuration components. The racks meet specific requirements imposed by the relevant railway networks, are vibration proof and are protected against electrical overvoltage. Ergonomically, they occupy only the smallest space.

“Siemens’ knowledge of the railway sector combined with proven know-how of mobile data transmission was decisive in this project”, said Christoph Caselitz, President of Mobile Networks at Siemens Communications. “Siemens has hereby reconfirmed its role as network integrator as well as its local role as competence center for mobile data.”

21Net

UK-based 21Net was created in 2001 to leverage advanced satellite technology to deliver broadband Internet to trains. Founded by business and high-tech industry veterans Henry Hyde-Thomson, James Rolfe, Douglas Dundonald and Jean-François de Lantsheere 21Net is under contract to the European Space Agency as well as receiving support from Venture Capital

Thalys

Thalys International, based in Brussels, is a joint venture between SNCB, the National Railway Company of Belgium, the Grandes Lignes International s.A., a subsidiary of the Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français (SNCF) as well as NS and Deutsche Bahn, the German railwas company. The high-speed train Thalys connects the countries France, Belgium, Germany and The Netherlands.

A Security Policy for Your iPAQ?

Whether you are a personal user or a corporate employee, if you have a mobile device, you should either have a security policy of your own or be bound by a corporate one. Some users have an informal security policy. However, many have no security policy at all and have not even thought through the security implications of owning a Pocket PC. The same is true of organizations, whether it be a government department, an established company, or a startup. Most organizations have employees who use mobile devices, whether those devices are mobile phones or PDAs.

This article can help companies think through a mobile security policy that will work for their organization. It can also be useful to help individuals determine what level of security they’re comfortable with for their devices.

You can read Darryl’s article here at Pocket PC Magazine.

What’s a moblog?

There are a lot of great places to visit to pick up information. Some are clearly better than others but that is probably a matter of personal taste on what you think is terrific. I love reading articles that Suzanne Ross write. They are always, clear, concise, interesting and most importantly, informative. Suzanne wrote a neat piece on how to Create Your Own Mobile Blog. In part, she said the following: Quote

First, what’s a moblog? A moblog, or a mobile blog, is an online record of anything you feel like sharing with the world, whether they want it or not. The difference between moblogging and regular blogging is that you use your phone or Pocket PC to post text or pictures.

There are obvious advantages to this. If you get inspired in the middle of a meadow, at your favorite local watering hole, or on a road trip, you won’t have to wait until you can get back to your desktop to send your thoughts and photos to the world.

Though moblogging isn’t new, it has been gaining popularity and attention, though I don’t think the uses of it have been fully explored. It seems a perfect way, for instance, for a real estate agent to show new properties to clients. I’ve been looking around for a house lately, and I’m frustrated by the lack of pictures on real estate sites. If an agent had a mobile blog, she could take pictures and immediately send them to her moblog.

If you want to find out more about moblogging, click HERE to read Suzanne’s tips.

Pocket PC Data Collection Solution

NOVA Research Company, a provider of innovative technology, consulting, and research support services to the global health and research communities, announced commercial availability of QDS(TM) version 2.4, the latest release of its widely used Questionnaire Development System software. Developed specifically to meet the unique needs of clinical and behavioral researchers, QDS(TM) 2.4 marks the addition of a handheld HAPI(TM) (Handheld-Assisted Personal Interview) Pocket PC module to its suite of survey software and new, expanded functionality for data collection. The new Pocket PC module is expected to increase user acceptance rates by 30 percent and reduce the cost of conducting complex multisite field research studies by 40 percent while allowing researchers to collect data in areas where use of a bulky laptop computer is not an option.

First introduced in 1997, QDS(TM) is known for its ability to simplify and automate survey administration, increase efficiency, and cut survey development time by up to 50 percent. QDS(TM) offers the unique ability to produce all materials needed to administer a questionnaire survey simultaneously in a variety of modes — paper, desktop, laptop, tablet PC, and now PDA Pocket PC — all from a single set of easily maintained specifications and without having to hire a computer programmer. QDS(TM) also promotes re- use of field-tested questions by providing the capability to copy specifications among questionnaires. In addition, the product allows data to be exported directly into other software programs, such as SAS, SPSS, and MS Access, for data analysis.

“Researchers have asked for a handheld data collection module that will increase interviewee acceptance rates in more public venues. The QDS 2.4 HAPI(TM) Pocket PC questionnaire module offers greater portability, increased flexibility, and faster completion of surveys,” said Peggy L. Young, President and CEO of NOVA Research Company. “It also lets researchers tailor the method of survey administration to the comfort level of the respondent, which is important when collecting sensitive or personal data or administering surveys in public settings such as shopping malls and bars. An added benefit is that research teams worldwide can now collaborate more effectively and continue to work in real time by using a wireless connection to upload data collected via a PDA to a central location anywhere in the world,” she continued.

QDS(TM) gives researchers more flexibility in managing survey data from clinical studies that identify problems potentially in need of preventive, therapeutic, or supportive services. The latest version, QDS HAPI(TM) for the Pocket PC personal digital assistant, is extremely practical for field studies.

“The new, expanded QDS(TM) version 2.4 lets me continue to ensure quality of data reconciled from different versions of behavioral research questionnaires, no matter which survey method is used,” said Phil Batterham, data management coordinator at the UCLA Center for Community Health in Los Angeles. Batterham has used QDS(TM) to implement and administer interviews for various research projects that involve high-risk populations (such as people living with HIV and homeless adolescents). “The automated questionnaire’s skips and checks are extremely useful, as the typical interview can take 1 to 2 hours and involve up to 1,000 questions based on 2,000 or more elements on background characteristics, risk behaviors, emotional well-being, health behaviors, and habits,” he added.

Dr. Adam Rosenblatt, Co-Principal Investigator of The Maryland Assisted Living Study, funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, is piloting the QDS-HAPI(TM) on Pocket PCs in a study in which he uses a Structured Clinical Interview for DSM, or SCID, to monitor a large number (300) of participants or residents in 26 unrelated assisted living facilities in order to determine the change in rates of psychiatric problems residents may experience.

New Features of the QDS 2.4 HAPI(TM) (Handheld-Assisted Personal Interview) module

— Wider portability. The new HAPI(TM) module allows users to be more mobile and conduct personal interviews using a Pocket PC handheld computer, eliminating carrying a heavy, more expensive laptop computer. — Automated edits. An enhanced edit feature allows users to automatically launch a second questionnaire if the respondent qualifies to move on to the next stage of a field-administered survey or needs a more in-depth diagnostic assessment. — Password protection. In line with stringent FDA compliance requirements for certain clinical trials and studies, QDS(TM) 2.4 has the ability to encrypt responses and password-protect questionnaires so that only authorized users can view and export collected data. — Customized reporting. Users can automatically generate customized reports in real time at any point in the baseline interview in order to better determine trends. Report elements support new types of substitution tokens that retrieve question text, question probes, and interviewer comments from the current interview.

QDS(TM) is a modular system consisting of three major components: Design Studio, Data Collection Modules, and Warehouse Manager. The four data collection modules include: Data Entry for paper questionnaires; CAPI (Computer-Assisted Personal Interview) for face-to-face interviewing; ACASI (Audio Computer-Administered Self-Interview) for more sensitive data collection and for interviewing respondents with reading difficulties; and HAPI(TM) (Handheld-Assisted Personal Interview) for the Pocket PC. Current QDS(TM) users can upgrade existing modules by downloading version 2.4 at $125 per module. Now that the QDS-HAPI(TM) module has been released, NOVA is in rapid-development mode to program a QDS-Web(TM) module for Web survey administration from the same Design Studio specification file.
