In an Unusual Move, Remedy Downgrades System Requirements for Alan Wake II Four Months After Release

Last fall’s highly anticipated horror game, Alan Wake II, had gamers on edge with its demanding system requirements. However, following the fresh patch for the game from Finnish studio, Remedy Entertainment, these requirements seem considerably less daunting.

To begin with, the recommended minimum configuration for running Alan Wake II on PC included a GeForce RTX 2060 or a Radeon RX 6600. This demanding requirement was due to the implementation of Mesh Shaders technology, which was incompatible with older video cards.

However, as of March 6, the release of patch 1.0.16.1 has broadened the game’s compatibility to include video cards without Mesh Shader support. This adjustment has notably improved the game’s performance, especially with GTX 10-series video cards.

Remedy has also carried out further measures to enhance the performance of Alan Wake II on Radeon graphics cards. As a result, the studio has managed to lower the game’s minimum system requirements.

Now, the adjusted minimum configuration (1080p, 30 frames/sec, low graphics settings, DLSS/FSR 2 in “Quality” mode) includes the GeForce GTX 1070 and RX 5600 XT. The updated system requirements for the game appear as follows:

Performance improvements from the recent Alan Wake II patch have also been observed in both older and modern video cards alike. For instance, a 14% speed increase has been noted on the RTX 4070.

Since its release on PC (EGS), PS5, Xbox Series X and S in October 2023, Alan Wake II has received high praise and multiple patches. By early February, game sales had surged beyond 1.3 million, marking the most successful debut in Remedy’s history.
