Hey I was wondering if anyone has used the GPS thingie for the IPAQ 3700. I’m interested in getting it but I’ve been trying to find some review of it somewhere and figured this forum would be a great place to get some opinions from actual users. So anyone? I’ve got onstar in my car already but I love my toys, basically the reason I got the IPAQ in the first place. While onstar is great, until I buy a new car I don’t have GPS on a screen in front of me and I think this would be a simple solution as long as it works well. Just wondering what you all thought. |

Welcome to Dave’s IPAQ. I have the 4700 and just bought the IPAQ Navigation System. It set up incredibly easy and I am very impressed with it. We have in-car navigation systems in various cars, but this IPAQ system is just as good , if not better. I love the fact that it’s so small , such that you can just take it with you if you travel and use rental cars. It comes with maps of the US and Canada. You can choose to download by State, Region or City. I’m really pleased with it.

Hey Laura thanks so much. Other then the program perhaps running a little bit slower on my 3700 I can’t possibly see a difference. Thanks again.  PS.

what to buy? Alright now that I know it works well, what do I get? I want a bluetooth GPS receiver. I looked at the GPS solutions, all 7 pages, and I’m just confused. Anymore suggestions Laura? And no way I’m being a mom of teenagers, I’m only 22! |

So I’m no expert on this as I didn’t search around, just got the IPAQ Navigation system from HPSHOPPING.COM. That’s all that’s needed. It comes with the software and the maps for the whole of US and Canada. You can select which states, regions, or cities you want to download to your IPAQ. For this you will definitely need a SD card for the storage. It comes with a car charger for the GPS unit which also adapts to charge the Ipaq in the car. But remember, I didn’t do any shopping around, so maybe there’s better ones out there, I don’t know. I’ve also seen ones that instead of being bluetooth, they fit into SD slot of IPAQ. But then what I don’t see is how you would store the map data for an IPAQ with just the SD slot as now you can’t use an SD card and the SD GPS receiver. All I know is that the one I got worked so well and the navigation system seems really ophisticated.

A good site for information on GPS for standalone handhelds or PDA based systems is http://gpsinformation.net
They might not have every PDA based system reviewed but they do have a bunch. A direct link is http://www.gpsinformation.org/dale/PDA.htm but make sure you check the home page for anything that has been updated. Also, you shouldn’t need to get the same hardware and software for things to work together, but if you do, there should be no pointing fingers at a problem by the vendors. So if you find a good deal on a bluetooth GPS but want a different software app, they should work together. A co-worker has the bluetooth TomTom unit at http://www.tomtom.com/products/cate…ID=1&Language=4 and it’s very nice. GPS units have a standard communication protocol that is used called NMEA and as long as the hardware device is sending NMEA commands and the software application is expecting NMEA commands, you should be good to go. I have a couple handheld GPS units and just got a iPaq so I’m looking at something like http://pfranc.com/cgi-bin/P/pPBT which adds bluetooth to an existing Garmin GPS. Hope that helps a little. I’m familiar with GPS in general but not PocketPC specific solutions (yet). Good luck with your decision. |

I wanted a GPs that was small, bluetooth, and would last. DeLorme was my solution for a variety of reasons but probably I was swayed because of previous success with a DeLorme GPS that I used with my laptop. They have a variety of GPS solutions that meet the needs of just about every situation…so they are definitely worth looking at. As for maps…I don’t think there is anything better. I like working on my PC, making a route and then placing it on my iPAQ. The best description of my experience with DeLorme is “flawless operation”. I reviewed two of their GPS solutions that you might want to look at:
