In a strategic move set to redefine the mid-sized pickup segment, Hyundai has confirmed a groundbreaking collaboration with General Motors, as revealed by Don Romano, the head of Hyundai Australia. The duo is gearing up to unveil a revolutionary mid-sized pickup truck in South America in 2028, with plans to introduce a variant tailored for North America by 2030 – a version that will include a high-performance SUV sibling.
Innovating Beyond the Badge
Speaking to CarExpert, Romano emphasized the company’s commitment to innovation, steering clear of the conventional strategy of badge engineering. Instead, Hyundai is investing in an entirely new platform set to challenge the very foundations of pickup truck design.
“This project is a guarantee; here’s the date, here’s the vehicle, here are its unique features,” remarked Romano, hinting at a product that promises to ‘blow minds’ with its ingenious design.
Exploring New Horizons in Hybrid Technology
Romano intriguingly alluded to a novel powertrain, dismissing the idea of a traditional plug-in hybrid and suggesting a fresh take on hybrid technology. There’s growing speculation that this could involve an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) system, wherein an internal combustion engine generates electricity rather than directly powering the vehicle-a technology already in Hyundai Group’s development pipeline.
A Competitive Landscape
The new model, built on a robust body-on-frame platform akin to the Kia Tasman’s, is designed to face down established rivals in the global arena. It aims to compete with stalwarts like the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max, Nissan Navara, Mitsubishi Triton, Chevrolet Colorado, Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier, and VW Amarok.
Despite the crowded field, Hyundai seems confident in this ambitious endeavor, trusting their innovative prowess to carve a niche in this competitive market.
