Wow, that looks like one sweet device. One thing i would of liked though is a larger screen.
But guess you can’t have everything Defiently on my wish list!

Edit: I also can’t belive that the FCC put this on the web! I can imagine that some people are going to be pretty upset.

The screen is nice but a lot of the programs are not formatted for it

Actually, I have seen alot of developers commenting on this screen issue, and they seem to think that the majority of software apps. will run with no problems at all.

True the programs I’ve used do work. I am sure that there might be some older ones that don’t.

I hope that the programs will work…it would be a big hit to purchase all new software!

I think it looks nice…only time will tell about performance.

Jack,

The performance is better due to the faster processor. The speakerphone and sound quality are vastly improved over the 6315. The intergrated keyboard is nice, since I have big fingers it took a little getting used to.

I can tell you from first hand experience having actually used a 6500 for about a day it is a nice device but the comments about screen size are very relevant. A few of observations: 1. It is lighter than the 6315. 2. The cell radio worked fine with no problems like the 6315. 3. Good move in suinig a 2.5mm headset jack which addressed one of my peeves with the 6315. 4. The key board is decent and seems well-designed. I think that given the target market they designed it for the screen is ok. Probably going for the people who think the smaller smartphones are too small and want better input capability.

With regard to the screen size, I found that one of our mobile apps would require scrolling where it didn’t before. For my application I feel this is a problem. From what they’ve told me they don’t have a version with a larger screen planned. Given the push for converged devices they may have to re-think that plan.

I have been using it a little over a month and I am quite happy with it. There are only a few applications where I have to scroll but I do see this as a potential issue.

The 6315’s button has the propensity to be pressed when used … is it the same with this one? Is there a way to lock the buttons, and keep them locked just to answer the phone?

Thanks for any info … I am awaiting the arrival of this one …

It is the same as the 6315 and like the 6315 it will depend on what case you use. The unit I have did not come with a case but I an sure that it will be similar to the 6315 style. The only difference is that you can disable the keyboard from working but the phone, mail, and contact buttons still work. It will also have a flip cover that will protect the screen again mine did not come with it since it is an early version but I am hoping it will be clear so you can still see the screen.

-Does the joystick actually work well this time? the 6315 never responded to up and down correctly without thinking you mean left/right now and then. This is bad because when you are scrolling up and down emails, it will go off track and onto a whole new mailbox. I’m hoping the joystick on this new model was corrected. (it looks different, so maybe? -I hear it may be out then end of this month. Other web sites say June. What’s your take? -Does it use the same stylus as any of the current Ipaq’s? If so which one? I’d like to pre-order a 3rd party all in one pen-stylus so its ready to go. -Does the camera really have a built in LED flash? (that’s a nice surpise) -Does the bluetooth really support 1.2? I hope they fixed the caller ID not showing up issues with the new Jabra and other caller ID enabled devices. -does the keyboard “feel” nice? I used to be a heavy blackberry user for many years and got really fast. I HATE the palm/treo keyboards and I’m hoping it’s nothing like that one.

-Does it feel pretty light compaired to the 6315?

The joystick does work rather well and is comfortable to use. I find it much easier to use than the 6315.

As far as a release date I do not know and cannot speak to that.

-Does it use the same stylus as any of the current Ipaq’s? If so which one? I’d like to pre-order a 3rd party all in one pen-stylus so its ready to go.

The stylus is very similiar to the stylus on the 2210.

-Does the camera really have a built in LED flash? (that’s a nice surpise)

Yes. Although it is not really a flash and it is not automatic. It is a light that you activate on the camera screen and it is either on or off.

-Does the bluetooth really support 1.2? I hope they fixed the caller ID not showing up issues with the new Jabra and other caller ID enabled devices.

It believe it does support 1.2 but since I do not have any of the caller ID devices I can’t say if this works.

-does the keyboard “feel” nice? I used to be a heavy blackberry user for many years and got really fast. I HATE the palm/treo keyboards and I’m hoping it’s nothing like that one.

I feel that the keya are a little closer together on this device as opposed the the Blackberry. I thought for sure that this would pose a problem but once I got used to it I can type just as well if not better then a Blackberry.

-Does it feel pretty light compaired to the 6315?

Yes. The 6500 is lighter, thinner and not as wide as the 6300. I put it in my shirt pocket and you really don’t even know that it is there.

Dave,

Sorry but I did not think to take some pictures. I’ll do better next time I promise.

I think HP has done a good job with this unit, but my main complaint is the screen size; it won’t work well with my intended deployment. I was really hoping it would too. And in all fairness to HP I don’t think I’m their target customer for this device. I think they are aiming at the Blackberry market as the screen size is similar. That and calling it a “mobile messenger” seems to be the clue for me. Time will tell if they are successful. I did speak with the HP reps at the Gartner Wireless Summit last week and asked if they are considering a version with a 3.5″ screen and the answer was no. Of course they might not know what development is working on and sales people are typically told to sell what you have now.

If I were looking for a Blackberry replacement with the added PDA fucntionality of Windows Mobile this is a good choice when it is available.

I’m on the verge of re-buying a 6315 in the hopes that the speakerphone problems, echo, ring volume have been addressed by the ROM or other fixes that will make the phone component workable. Am I dreaming? However, I’m tempted to wait for the 6500 based on things you’ve said – (mainly great speaker-faster processor) What are the consequences of the smaller screen except for some additional scrolling with word docs, websites, spreadsheets, etc.? I only use these MS programs occassionally-but often enough that I don’t want to switch to Treo, etc.. I just want a decent phone including the interface with outlook and the ability to do excel, word, powerpoint when I need them. Any idea of release date? Is the smaller form-factor fairly significant as compared to the 6315? Please give your blunt opininon-I can take it.

Thanks Agent Man, Jeff

Jeff, Side by side I think the 6500 is a better unit. Surprisingly the unit is only slightly smaller than the 6315 but the form factor and weight make it feel even smaller. I really do not have any issues with the smaller screen so far everything I have loaded works, yes, you have to scoll a lot more but that is made easier by using the center joystick like button. The only option that I wish it had was WiFi but that is something that I can live without for the time being. I don’t have any idea as to when HP will release the unit but in my opionin I think it is a winner. It will be interesting to get everyone elses take when it is relased.

Steve

I should have been more clear as I agree that the 6500 is a big improvement over the 6315. It’s a little thing but going with a 2.5mm jack was certainly one of those key improvements. I never understood why the 6315 has a 3.5mm jack.

I liked it as a Blackberry replacement and I think that’s the market they are aiming to capture.
