A Dog Who Inspired the Popular Doge Meme and Became the Symbol of Dogecoin Has Passed Away

Kabosu, a renowned Shiba Inu dog and famed internet meme ‘Doge’ dating back to the early 2010s, passed away on May 24 at the age of 18.5. Known as the mascot of the cryptocurrency Dogecoin (DOGE), Kabosu was reportedly the oldest of her breed.

The sad news was shared by the Dogecoin developer team on their X account. According to them, Kabosu passed peacefully in the arms of her owner. The developers highlighted the significant influence that the dog had worldwide, emphasizing that her life was filled with happiness and love.

In Memory of Kabosu

Her smile, her wagging tail, and her warmth will always be with me,” Kabosu’s owner Atsuko Sato wrote on her blog. She disclosed that a farewell ceremony would be held on May 29, between 13:00 and 16:00 local time, at the Kaori Floral Shop in Narita, Japan.

Atsuko Sato had adopted Kabosu in 2008 from an animal shelter that was due to be shut down, with the remaining animals facing euthanasia. Kabosu was fortunate to find a new home alongside three cats. Upon hearing about her Shiba Inu’s internet popularity, Sato started to frequently post pictures of Kabosu on her blog. She added that her dog’s popularity has led to an increase in shelter dog adoptions.
