Arm Holdings Sets Potential Market Domination

Rene Haas, CEO of Arm Holdings, has announced the company’s aggressive maneuver to control more than half of the Windows PC market over the next five years. This bold claim emerged during the Computex 2024 event. Currently, Microsoft and its hardware partners continue to launch new devices powered by Arm architecture. By 2025, Arm anticipates that more than 100 billion AI-enabled Arm devices will be operational worldwide.

Driven by demand for Arm technology in PCs, the company’s stocks listed on the US stock exchange showed a 2.6% rise during premarket trading on Monday. This demand boost came after Microsoft announced ambitious plans last month to launch next-generation AI-enabled PCs to rival Google and Apple.

In an industry shift, the Windows operating system will now run on Arm’s architecture, traditionally used mostly on Android smartphones. For decades, Intel chips have dominated the PC processor industry; if Arm’s market push is successful, a monumental shift in the PC market will follow.

“The Arm’s share in the Windows market, I genuinely believe, can exceed 50% in the next five years,” Rene Haas confidently stated. “They [Microsoft] have gone far beyond what they had in tools for developers, and they have really gained momentum in the last few years. They are incredibly, incredibly committed to software.”

Emulating Apple’s successful venture into home-grown processors, Microsoft and its partners aim to follow suit. Apple’s M-series chip-based devices have been delivering remarkable battery life and high performance to laptops and desktops for approximately four years.

Haas is confident that others will follow in the footsteps of Qualcomm, which developed the Snapdragon X Elite processor based on Arm architecture. Microsoft has already signed contracts with a multitude of computer manufacturers, including Asus and Dell Technologies, to launch Windows-operated systems powered by Arm chips.

By the end of next year, Haas believes that over 100 billion AI-supported devices using Arm architecture will be in circulation worldwide.
