DUST NETWORKS™ LAUNCHES SMARTMESH™ NETWORKING SYSTEM

Dust Networks today announced the availability of SmartMesh’, a wireless mesh networking platform for enterprise-class monitoring and control solutions. SmartMesh is optimized for low data-rate sensor networking applications in building automation, industrial monitoring, and security, enabling unprecedented access to information about the physical world. SmartMesh combines sophisticated mesh networking software and battery-powered wireless nodes to provide unmatched reliability, manageability and ease of installation.

Using the SmartMesh wireless networking system, businesses can dramatically reduce the cost of deploying, installing, and managing a sensing and control network. SmartMesh is easy to install and highly manageable; the self-configuring network requires no site survey, no RF knowledge, and no device-level management. The enterprise-class SmartMesh system allows companies in the building automation and industrial monitoring market to deploy wireless sensing and control networks with confidence.

SmartMesh also enables entirely new applications. This completely wireless system requires neither power nor communication wires so devices can be completely untethered, creating opportunities in applications such as energy monitoring, HVAC systems, machine-health monitoring, and perimeter security.

“Low-power, wireless mesh networking can offer many advantages to perimeter security and border intrusion. Advances in the maturity and reliability of this technology can enable new capabilities that were not possible before,” said Tom Sereno, Division Manager from SAIC, the nation’s largest employee-owned research and engineering firm.

By providing an easy, manageable, and reliable way to deploy sensors and collect data about physical environments, Dust Networks enables organizations to reduce costs, increase efficiency, and gain greater visibility into the condition of physical assets. SmartMesh offers the industry’s lowest power consumption and the highest reliability to ensure that management and maintenance costs stay low throughout the life of the application.

“Full mesh networks have traditionally demanded line power due to each node’s role as both a data collector and a router,” said Joyce Putscher, Director & Principal Analyst, In-Stat/MDR. “Dust Networks’ SmartMesh technology has evolved to ensure the flexibility of wireless and the reliability of a full mesh network in a solution that can run for multiple years on simple AA batteries. For customers, this dramatically reduces the costs of installing, deploying, and maintaining a wireless sensing solution.”

A SmartMesh system includes:

SmartMesh Software – compact networking software running on each network node that executes routing, timing, network optimization and management functions to ensure efficient end-to-end connectivity and long-term networking reliability

SmartMesh Manager – network interface device providing an open network management interface and quality of service functions for a network of Motes

Motes – ultra low-power wireless communication nodes running SmartMesh software that are designed to be integrated into custom packaging, connected to antenna and battery, and wired to sensors and actuators

“In order to meet their business objectives, our customers demand wireless networks with high reliability, complete end-to-end manageability, that are easily integrated with sensors and applications, and can be rapidly deployed” said Joy Weiss, President and CEO of Dust Networks. “SmartMesh sets the benchmark on all of these fronts, speeding our customers’ time to market, slashing their installation costs and dramatically increasing the flexibility of their product and service offerings.”
