Beginning the 26th of June, the once popular IM client ICQ is set to halt its operations, according to an announcement on the messenger’s official website. Users are advised to consider alternatives like “VK Messenger” and VK WorkSpace services.

Uncertainty Over Suspension

It has not been clarified whether ICQ’s halt of operations is temporary or permanent. According to Interfax data, citing information provided by VK’s press service, it appears that the instant messaging platform is fully shutting down. The company plans to concentrate on developing ‘VK Messenger’ for individual users and enhancing the VK WorkSpace for businesses. “ICQ employees will joint the ‘VK Messenger’ and VK WorkSpace product teams,” the VK announcement stated.

ICQ’s Legacy

ICQ has been part of the digital communication landscape since 1996 when it was designed by Israeli firm Mirabilis. The company was acquired by American corporation AOL in 1998. In 2010, the ICQ assets were acquired by Russian investment fund Digital Sky Technologies for $187.5 million. That same year, the fund was rebranded as Mail.ru Group and the ICQ service became part of the newly formed internet holding company, now known as VK.
