Google Adds RCS Message Editing and Other Useful Features to Android

Google has introduced seven new features and updates to the Android operating system. Among the most noticeable changes is the revamped ‘Messages’ application, which now allows users to edit their RCS- messages up to 15 minutes after they have been sent. Other updates include enhancements to Google Meet, Google Home, Wear OS, Gboard keyboard, digital car keys, and simplified usage of phones as a hotspot.

Editing a text message can be done by long pressing on the message and selecting the pencil icon that appears at the top of the screen. This feature has been anticipated by users since last year, when references to editing first appeared in the ‘Messages’ code. The update roll-out has already started, affecting all smartphones running Android 8 or later – this is the OS version from which RCS support began to be implemented. Similar editing functions have already been added to competing messaging services like WhatsApp and iMessage.

Furthermore, an Android tablet or Chromebook can now be connected to a phone’s hotspot with a single tap, without needing a password. The update also allows users to switch between connected devices during Google Meet calls by pressing the Cast icon. These capabilities will be available on phones and tablets running Android 11 or later from June 10th.

The Google Home Favorites widget, which allows users to quickly view and manage frequently used smart home devices, has been made available in the Android public preview and can be added to the home screen on Android phones. As of today, the Google Home Favorites tile will appear on smartwatches running Wear OS 3 or later. A new PayPal option will be added to the ‘Wallet’ app for smartwatches in the US and Germany.

Digital car keys support has been extended to a range of vehicles, including select models from Mini, Mercedes-Benz, and Polestar. This update is available for Android 12 or later. Mini car support, which is already available in the EU, began in the US on May 13th. Mercedes-Benz support will be available from June 10th, and Polestar support will begin between June 17th and 21st.

And last but not least, Emoji Kitchen will receive new sticker combination updates on June 10th, which users will be able to share via Gboard.
