Today at Computex 2024, Intel announced a major release – its Lunar Lake mobile processors. This focus underscores the significance of the laptop segment for Intel’s business, as the company sells nearly twice as many processors in this market compared to the desktop sector. However, Intel also revealed the impending launch of its Arrow Lake desktop processors in the fourth quarter.
Laptops powered by Lunar Lake processors will also start shipping next quarter, just slightly ahead of their desktop counterparts, mainly in terms of architecture information disclosure. By then, over 80 different models of laptops based on these new chips will be available for consumers. Patrick Gelsinger, Intel CEO, speaking at Computex 2024, referred to the present time as “the most consequential in our career”, alluding to the entire company’s workforce. According to him, such crucial periods occur in the computer industry roughly every 25 years.
CEO of Intel declined to share specifics of the Arrow Lake Core Ultra desktop processors, confirming only that they will begin shipping in the fourth quarter of this year, as reported by PCWorld. Other company representatives further explained that these processors will carry the Core Ultra designation, indicating the incorporation of a specialized neural processing unit (NPU) for accelerating artificial intelligence systems.
Alongside, it was revealed that Intel will start to ship its Panther Lake mobile processors fabricated on Intel’s 18A technology in 2025. Initially, it was planned to implement this fabrication process during Lunar Lake’s production this year. However, the chips are currently being produced by TSMC utilizing N6 and N3E technologies. Intel recently announced that mastering the 18A fabrication process next year will trigger the reverse migration of Intel’s orders from TSMC’s line to its proprietary line.
