Apple’s iOS 17 Seeing Steady Growth, Installed On 77% Of Compatible Devices

This week, Apple unveiled iOS 18, the next iteration of its mobile operating system. While the beta version of the platform is already available for developers, regular users will have to wait until fall. Meanwhile, Apple updated the OS distribution data, indicating iOS 17 is currently installed on 77% of compatible devices.

Popularity Comparisons With Past Iterations

According to Apple, the distribution level of the currently prevalent iOS 17 is nearing 80%. This is impressive, although it is worth noting that its predecessor, iOS 16, had a faster distribution rate. By June 2023, iOS 16 was installed on 81% of relevant devices.

Proportions Among Recently Released iPhones and iPads

Considering iPhones released in the past four years, 86% are running iOS 17. Another 11% are still running the previous version, iOS 16, with the remaining 3% running older versions of the operating system. Around the same time in 2023, 90% of iPhones released in the past four years were running iOS 16. For iPads, 68% of all tablet computers are running iPadOS 17, with an additional 17% on iPadOS 16.

OS Data Consistently Shared to Guide Developers

Apple regularly releases OS distribution data so developers can more accurately plan which platform versions to implement in their products. The upcoming iOS 18 is packed with numerous new features including neural network-based tools. This will likely boost its appeal, ultimately driving higher distribution rates.
