Since announcing support for RIM, PocketPC, Smartphone, Symbian and J2ME compatible devices in early March, Jabber, Inc. has partnered with mov Software (PocketPC), Vayusphere (RIM Blackberry) and Movial (MS Smartphone, Symbian and J2ME) in order to give people and organizations the ability to wirelessly connect with the Jabber XCP server.
Jabber, Inc.’s Extensible Communications Platform (Jabber XCP) is one of the world’s most widely deployed commercial messaging and presence platforms. Based upon the only IETF-approved Internet standard for presence and instant messaging, the Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP), Jabber XCP is deployed to more than 5 million seats in hundreds of the world’s leading organizations.
Demonstrating several compatible devices at CTIA Wireless I.T. & Entertainment 2004 at Moscone Center, the company noted that connection to the Jabber XCP server makes each device technically interoperable with most other instant messaging (IM) and presence networks and provides access to a wide range of real-time presence-powered applications.
Each wireless client initially offers text-based IM and presence management features, while the RIM client also offers multi-user text conferencing. Shawn Carrigan, Jabber, Inc.’s product manager for wireless initiatives, outlined the company’s wireless product roadmap for 2005: “J2ME, Smartphone and Symbian users can expect to see a wide range of functionality upgrades including push-to-talk, push-to-video, push-to-conference, automated provisioning, privacy lists, offline message retrieval and the ability to add or manage contacts by phone number. Jabber, Inc. is considering SIP support through a SIP to XMPP gateway, but the company has no definitive plans yet.
“For RIM and Pocket PC users, we will enhance enterprise grade services such as advanced authentication and security modules, multi-user text conferencing for PocketPC, access controlled group support and other presence based services.”
On the partnership front, Jabber, Inc. is also working closely with Movial to provide SDKs for Smartphone, Symbian and J2ME applications, while assessing similar support for BREW. Both companies expect SDKs to become increasingly important to operators and mobile OEMs as they deploy and build advanced presence-enabled gaming and location-based services.
Rounding out its wireless offering, Jabber, Inc. reiterated its already available SMS, IMPS (WV) and WAP gateways as evidence of the company’s continuing commitment to interoperability.
The RIM, PocketPC, Smartphone, Symbian and J2ME clients, as well as the SMS, Wireless Village and WAP gateways are currently available for evaluation and purchase. Contact info@jabber.com or 303-308-3257 for pricing details and additional information.
