Only a few days after the presentation of Doom: The Dark Ages at the Xbox Games Showcase 2024, an enterprising modder has added one of the new game’s most recognizable features to the classic Doom.
The highlighted feature is the shield-saw, used by Doom: The Dark Ages’ main character for both protection against enemy gunfire and remote attacks by swinging the blade like a discus.
Acknowledging the potential of the Doomslayer’s new arsenal, modder Craneo has added a functional shield-saw from Doom: The Dark Ages to the original 1993 Doom. The mod was completed in just a few hours.
The mod transforms the iconic Doom chainsaw into the forthcoming Doom: The Dark Ages star. The shield-saw provides the player with full protection against incoming damage, can be used as a projectile, and doubles as a chainsaw.
A journalist from PC Gamer, who has already tried the mod, asserts that Craneo’s version of the shield-saw is exceedingly impressive, even saving the hero from an explosion and a deceitful attack.
Following the successful implementation of the shield-saw, the modder has also migrated another new Doom: The Dark Ages weapon to the classic Doom – a gun that shoots skull fragments. The shield-saw mod can be downloaded here and the skull-fragment gun here.
Doom: The Dark Ages is a medieval prequel to Doom (2016), revealing the backstory of the Doomslayer. The game is scheduled for release on PC (Steam, Microsoft Store), PS5, Xbox Series X and Series S, and included in the Game Pass, in 2025.
