Latest Update for Windows 11 Breaks Taskbar

Microsoft has identified a new issue with an optional, non-security update for Windows 11 that could crash taskbar functions for users. The problematic update, KB5037853, was released earlier this week and contains enhancements for ‘Explorer’, as well as addressing 32 other known bugs.

While designed to improve the operating system’s general function, Microsoft has found that the update can cause the taskbar to malfunction on devices running Windows 11 23H2 and Windows 11 22H2. “Post this update, you may experience taskbar issues. The taskbar might behave erratically, become unresponsive, disappear and reappear,” Microsoft explained in a message. This issue can show up in the Windows Logs section of the event journal as error “Event ID 1000”.

The software giant had previously released cumulative update KB5037849 for Windows 10 22H2 just a few days ago. However, the release was not smooth – some users reported that the Copilot shortcut was moving on its own when using multiple monitors. Moreover, the taskbar could malfunction when positioned vertically. In addition to these issues, the update also disrupted the Microsoft Connected Cache when using DHCP Option 235, and was causing error 0x80070520 to pop up when trying to change the image of a user profile.
