Lenovo Releases Mobile GeForce RTX 4050 That Connects Via Unique M.2

Lenovo, a leading technology company, has engineered an unusual mobile video card, the GeForce RTX 4050, for their all-in-one PCs. The accelerator is designed in an MXM (Mobile PCI Express Module) format but leverages the triple M.2 slot commonly employed for SSD connection.

Unconventional Connection

Mobile video cards of the MXM format typically use PCIe 4.0 x4 or PCIe 4.0 x8 interfaces for connection. Lenovo, however, has fitted the accelerator with three M.2 blade connectors, each supporting four PCIe 4.0 lanes. If a video card is not in the slot, one of these can be used for an NVMe drive connection.

GeForce RTX 4050 Specifications

The mobile GeForce RTX 4050 employs an AD107 graphic processor, which features 2,560 CUDA cores operating at a speed of up to 1,755 MHz. The configurations offer up to 6GB of memory, with 96-bit bus support. The card’s maximum power consumption is profiled at 50 watts.

Unique Connection Type

Lenovo currently offers this unique video card connection with three M.2 slots exclusively for the RTX 4050, although there are sufficient PCIe lanes, in theory, to connect an RTX 4060. It appears the new connection type has not yet been standardized, as suggested by the fact that there is no provision for securing a screw when installing an SSD into the M.2 slot.
