M**a Accused Again of Illegally Collecting User Data for AI Training, This Time in Norway

Norwegian Complaint Against Meta AI Training Use of User Posts: What We Know

A complaint has been filed against Meta in Norway over its plans to use user posts from Facebook and Instagram to train artificial intelligence models.

The Alleged Breach of Data Protection Rules by Meta

Acknowledging the Norwegian Consumer Council’s opinion, this particular initiative by the American company infringes upon the data protection rules established in the European Union. According to Bloomberg, Meta has “deliberately complicated” the process by using misleading design templates and vague wording during user consent requests.

Past Allegations Against Meta

This is not a first-of-a-kind complaint against Meta in Europe. Previously, the company was accused of collecting users’ personal data for targeted advertising, without gaining sufficient user consent. “We urge the Data Protection Agency to meticulously scrutinize the legality of Meta’s actions in this matter and in ensuring that the company operates in complete compliance with the law,” stated Inger Lise Blyverket, head of the Norwegian Consumer Council.

The Official Complaint and its Larger Implications

Prepared by the European Centre for Digital Rights, the official complaint will be forwarded to not only Norwegian regulators, but also other European data protection bodies. The Irish Commission will play a significant role, given that Meta’s European headquarters is located in Dublin.

The decision on this matter could potentially shape the future of how personal data from users are utilized by internet companies.
