Microsoft has a habit of periodically forcing updates on consumer computers. The purpose is to ensure most users are working with the latest versions of the software platform. This same approach will be extended to last year’s release of Windows 11 23H2, which is now entering a phase of wider deployment.
Information on Microsoft Support’s page announces that compatible computers will soon be automatically updated to Windows 11 23H2. “This automatic update is intended for devices with versions of Windows 11 where support has ended or is nearing its end”, Microsoft’s announcement reads.
Devices currently running Windows 11 21H2 and Windows 11 22H2 will, therefore, be subject to this forced update. Support for Windows 11 21H2 ended on October 10, 2023, and Windows 11 22H2 will remain up-to-date until October 8, 2024. When Microsoft ceases support, it implies that they will stop releasing updates for those OS versions, including security patches.
The automatic update to Windows 11 23H2 will happen in stages. As a part of this activity, Microsoft uses Artificial Intelligence-based technologies to identify devices that are most compatible with the update and can therefore lead to a reduced chance of unexpected outcomes. Such computers will be updated as a priority, while systems where issues may arise due to the update will be moved to the back of the queue.
