Mozilla Undertakes Major Restructuring to Focus on Firefox Development and AI Technologies

Earlier this month, Mozilla, the company behind the successful Firefox browser, welcomed a new CEO. Today, the company announced key changes to its business strategy, which involves staff cuts and decreased investments in some products, including VPN, Relay and Online Footprint Scrubber, the latter was launched just last week.

Among other changes, Mozilla plans to shut down Hubs – its 3D virtual world launched back in 2018. Around 60 employees are expected to leave the company in the near future. Moving forward, Mozilla’s strategy centers on incorporating “robust AI technology into Firefox”. This new focus will involve merging divisions dedicated to Pocket and Content, as well as teams centered around AI and machine learning technology development.

Over the past few years, Mozilla expanded its interests while its flagship Firefox product continued to lose market share. Despite frequent criticism, company officials maintained the need for portfolio diversification beyond Firefox to ensure Mozilla’s long-term survival. The new restructuring signifies a clear shift in focus back towards Firefox, which is sure to please the browser’s faithful users.
