Nvidia CEO acknowledges that Samsung’s HBM3E memory requires further refinement

In March, the first hints of Nvidia’s intentions to approve the use of Samsung’s HBM3E memory in its accelerators surfaced. SK hynix has long enjoyed this privilege, and Micron joined them recently. At Computex 2024, Nvidia’s founder was forced to admit that work on certifying Samsung’s products was ongoing but further improvement was necessary.

This was the first clear comment from official company representatives concerning Samsung’s HBM3E chip certification for Nvidia’s needs. According to Bloomberg, Nvidia said the certification process is ongoing. However, CEO Jensen Huang noted there are some engineering tasks that still need to be completed. He would have appreciated it if everything was ready “yesterday”, but in reality, Nvidia must exercise patience.

Reminiscently, a recent Reuters publication reported about Samsung’s unsuccessful attempt to get the HBM3E memory certified by Nvidia due to alleged high energy consumption and heat emission of these chips. The Nvidia CEO did not explicitly specify the existing problems but suggested that work still needs to be done. Samsung representatives have expressed their dissatisfaction with these rumors, although their responses were not specific enough to discern the true situation.
