Overclock without Voiding the Warranty: Nvidia Has Introduced a Tool for Safe Video Card Overclocking

Nvidia Unveils Enhanced Nvidia App Capabilities at Computex 2024

Though Nvidia made no new graphic card launches at Computex 2024, it showcased some new features for its Nvidia App, which combines the GeForce Experience with Nvidia settings. Notably, the app now includes a proprietary tool for overclocking GeForce graphics cards and supports the recording of streaming video using the AV1 codec.

Superior Gameplay Recording with AV1 Codec

Users can now record their gameplay in the SDR and HDR formats at a rate of 120 frames per second, thanks to the AV1 codec supported by the Nvidia App. The AV1 codec is used by many streaming platforms and requires a potent GPU for encoding high-quality, high-frame-rate video. It is compatible with the GeForce RTX 4000 series graphics cards only when used with the Nvidia App.

Nvidia demonstrated the AV1 codec’s capabilities using the game Horizon Forbidden West, comparing it to the H.264 codec at identical settings (4K, 120 FPS, and 10 Mbps). Nvidia data indicates that AV1 encoding stream reduces color bands and significantly enhances image detail.

Users can activate this feature by going into the Nvidia App settings and setting the frame capture rate to 120 FPS.

Automated Overclocking for GeForce Cards

The most intriguing new feature of the Nvidia App is its automatic overclock setting for GeForce mobile and desktop graphics cards. The app autonomously scans the hardware in use and chooses the most optimal settings. The advanced settings allow users to manually adjust parameters such as voltage, power, temperature, and cooling fan rotation speed to their requirements.

Graphic recognizing tool interface

When activated, the feature automatically scans the GPUs periodically to determine the optimal performance settings. A full scan may take between 10 to 20 minutes, depending on chosen settings. During this process, Nvidia recommends leaving the PC undisturbed to ensure accurate results.
