AI Developer Andrej Karpathy to Depart from OpenAI
Slovak-Canadian scientist Andrej Karpathy has declared his second departure from artificial intelligence (AI) startup, OpenAI, with plans to focus on personal projects. Karpathy, who previously worked at Tesla, initially left OpenAI in 2017. He returned the following year, but his latest announcement signals another significant focus shift for the scientist.
Karpathy Confirms Departure
Karpathy confirmed his departure via social media platform X on Monday, emphasizing his intention to work on his own projects. He insisted that there was no scandal behind his decision, but jokingly welcomed all conspiracy theories from subscribers, often finding them amusing.
A Year at OpenAI
In reflecting on his time at OpenAI, Karpathy acknowledged the value of the relationships he had made, and the encouraging future plans of the company. He praised the strength of the OpenAI team, and indicated that an unknown developer whom he had worked with previously would be taking his place.
OpenAI Expresses Gratitude
The OpenAI team thanked Karpathy for his contributions, wishing him the best for his new ventures. Karpathy was presumably working on an AI personal assistant project while at OpenAI. With his future projects, the scientist hopes to bring improvements and kindness to the world, aiming to reduce unnecessary resource consumption in all senses of the phrase.
