“Ricor” launches a robotic PC case factory in Arzamas with a capacity of 1 million units per year.

Russian Electronics Manufacturer Set to Produce PC Cases by 2024

A revelation from Russian electronics producer, “Ricor” points to the potential manufacturing of PC cases by the end of 2024, according to a representative from the company as reported by “Vedomosti”. The move is aimed at boosting the ‘domesticity’ score of the equipment, in line with the Ministry of Industry and Trade’s assessment criteria.

The total investment in the PC case manufacturing initiative, which will be launched at a facility in Arzamas near Nizhny Novgorod, is approximately 400 million rubles (approx. $5.36 million). Ricor forecasts a four-year return on this investment. The cases are for the company’s products but will also fit other domestic electronic manufacturers’ needs. The required metal will be purchased domestically, while plastic will be sourced from abroad. The maximum production capacity is projected at one million units per year, thereby covering 35% of all Russian market needs which stands at around 2.9 million PC cases per year.

Sales of domestic desktop PCs in Russia for the first quarter of 2024 stood at 260,000 units, or 20% of the total volume, according to “M.Video-Eldorado” statistics. However, Russian manufactures presently depend on China for most of their PC case orders. Currently, Ricor is overseeing the delivery and installation of robotic production equipment – with ten specialists on site.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade’s system for assessing product localization level in Russia awards points for each technological operation and home-made component. Reaching a certain number of points qualifies the product as domestic and enters it into the ministry’s register – it can then be purchased by state customers and companies with state participation. In 2024, the minimum threshold is set at 140 points, 20 of which can be earned solely from a homemade case.

The production of computer cases is a technologically complicated and expensive process. It requires purchasing equipment worth hundreds of millions of rubles as stated by experts interviewed by “Vedomosti”. Some of this equipment must be imported due to the lack of necessary machinery in Russia. Consequently, domestic cases will initially cost more than Asian ones, given their origin—the domestic roots hence sets them apart.
