In conjunction with Microsoft Mobile & Embedded DevCon, Socket Communications, Inc., the Mobile Connection Company, announced Socket’s Wi-Fi(R) Companion and SocketScan bar code scanning and RFID applications are operational on Microsoft’s latest mobile operating system, Windows Mobile 5.0.
By supporting Windows Mobile 5.0, Socket makes it easier for mobile professionals to stay connected while on the go. Key applications including Socket’s Wi-Fi Companion and SocketScan deliver robust features that enable mobile professionals to connect their mobile device to networks anytime, anywhere.
“Socket’s strategic membership in the Mobility Partner Advisory Council enabled us to deliver early support for Windows Mobile 5.0 in our Wi-Fi Companion and the latest SocketScan application,” said Peter Phillips, vice president of marketing at Socket. “We’re excited to give users an even better mobile experience as our applications are enhanced for Microsoft’s new platform.”
Designed for Windows Mobile-based Pocket PCs with integrated 802.11 WLAN, the Socket Wi-Fi Companion is an intuitive, graphical software application that greatly improves the user’s experience detecting hotspots, setting up and monitoring a connection, performing basic site management functions, viewing access points and determining the strength of a wireless connection.
SocketScan, the keyboard wedge application shipped with every Socket bar code scanning and RFID product, reads bar code or RFID tag data directly into any active Windows program as though it had been typed on a keyboard without requiring additional programming.
“With Windows Mobile 5.0, Microsoft is enabling mobile partners such as Socket Communications to create innovative solutions that will increase productivity and deliver added value to a wide range of mobile customers,” said Chris Hill, group product manager for the Mobile and Embedded Devices Division at Microsoft Corp. “Socket was able to leverage the advanced productivity features supported by Windows Mobile-based software to provide our customers with a powerful and simplified way to improve the WLAN connectivity experience or collect bar code and RFID data on a Windows Mobile-based device.”
