A recent report by IDC reveals a significant decrease in global computer shipments during 2023. The report states that desktop and laptop computer shipments decreased by 8.8% in comparison to 2022 figures. This considerable reduction in computer shipments is ranked as the second-largest percentage decrease since IDC began monitoring the computer market in 2008.
While a downward trend was observed for shipments throughout 2023, there was a shift towards stabilization during mid-2023. In the last quarter, deliveries increased by 6.1% compared to the same period in 2022. IDC analyst Jay Chou shared positively about the conclusions of 2023, expressing hope for the future.
Chou predicts a forthcoming recovery in the market, strengthened by various indicators such as the successful last quarter of 2023. This recovery is expected to gain momentum in the latter half of 2024. Factors contributing to long-term recovery include the impending end of Windows 10’s lifecycle, leading many organizations to transition to Windows 11. New computer purchases will likely increase as a result. Additionally, anticipated devices with new processors, especially those optimized for artificial intelligence tasks, are expected to stimulate demand for computers.
Dell continues to lead the market in computer shipments despite a slight decrease in the company’s PC deliveries in the fourth quarter of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022. HP follows in second place, managing to significantly increase their deliveries in the final quarter. Lenovo comes in third place, with its share of the market increasing by 11% in the fourth quarter.
IDC forecasts a 5.2% increase in computer shipments for 2024, with continued growth expected into 2025. Analysts predict that the volume of global PC shipments in 2025 will further increase by 7.9%. However, a slowdown in growth is expected at the end of 2025, when the transition to Windows 11 nears completion.
