VK Ecosystem Surpasses YouTube in Mobile Traffic Share in Russia for the First Time

The VK ecosystem overtook YouTube in mobile traffic share in Russia for the first time in May, indicating its potential for successful competition with the Google platform for audience attention. This was reported by Interfax, quoting Maksut Shadaev, the head of the Ministry of Digital Development (MDD) of Russia.

“Our task is to increase the share of Russian platforms in the overall consumption structure. I looked at the statistics for May and saw an interesting fact that for the first time, VK ecosystem, by volume, by mobile traffic share, overtook YouTube. This is a very important fact, I believe, this is a very good result of work”, cited the source quoting Mr. Shadaev.

State Support for Russian Platforms

The MDD Head also added that VK’s May performance indicates the ecosystem’s capability to genuinely compete with YouTube. “We don’t limit YouTube, but we successfully compete with it … Our task as a state is to create such incentives for our platforms to develop,” noted the Minister.

Mobile Traffic Data

A spokesperson for the MDD reported that the share of VK and “Odnoklassniki” in the mobile operators’ traffic structure in May amounted to 17%. During the same period, YouTube’s share was 16%.
