Xiaomi Delves into Network Storage: A New Frontier in Smart Home Tech

Xiaomi, a company renowned for its innovation in smart technologies, is delving into the Network-Attached Storage (NAS) market with its latest project. As the demand for centralized data storage solutions grows, Xiaomi’s entry into this sector signifies an important development in the tech industry, providing users with seamless access to shared files across multiple devices.

From Speculation to Reality

The journey towards developing a NAS device by Xiaomi began unintentionally. Initial speculation arose when a marketing image of one of Xiaomi’s 10G routers inadvertently resembled a NAS device. This sparked widespread discussion within tech communities, eventually motivating Xiaomi to explore the concept seriously. According to insider Smart Pikachu, the Xiaomi NAS is set to support both 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch SATA hard drives and will be compatible with major operating systems including Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Aiming for Seamless Integration

Size specifications of the new NAS device indicate a compact dimension of 200.5 x 85 x 16 mm, featuring connectivity options such as USB 3.0, HDMI, and a 2.5 Gb Ethernet port. It’s expected to launch alongside the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, aiming to enhance connectivity within the Mi Home ecosystem. Xiaomi Ecosystem General Manager, Chen Bo, highlighted the vision for this device as an intelligent data storage hub that integrates effortlessly with Xiaomi’s wide array of products. Users can look forward to convenient connections with Xiaomi smartphones, TVs, tablets, and PCs, featuring expanded mobile storage, AI-organized photo albums, poster-styled movie libraries, cloud access, and remote downloads.

“Our NAS device will transform how users interact with their smart home data,” said Chen Bo, emphasizing user-friendly design over complex enthusiast systems.

Market Readiness and Future Prospects

Breaking away from traditional enthusiast-oriented NAS systems, Xiaomi aims to offer a user-centric experience designed for everyday consumers. The company is nearing the completion of mass production and internal testing, set to conclude in October 2025. With plans to release the product before the year’s end, Xiaomi is emphasizing improved compatibility with Apple devices, promoting broader adoption of NAS solutions.

Xiaomi’s foray into the NAS market not only highlights a strategic expansion but also sets a competitive tone against other tech giants in the smart home technology space. Smart Pikachu has previously been accurate in leaking information about notable Xiaomi products, including the Xiaomi 13 Ultra smartphone and Xiaomi Pad 6 tablet.
