 DVD to Pocket PC One-Step
No – that was NOT a typo. Here is a FREE ONE-STEP process to take a DVD that you own, ‘rip’, decode, encode and convert to a usable format… all with a few simple keystrokes to XviD or DivX. What you will need BEFORE you begin: After downloading the Fair Use Wizard go ahead and install BEFORE you proceed to the actual process. Fair Use will need your machine to restart before continuing. STEP ONE:
Once started, the process will run for as little as an hour or as much as 3 hours depending on the length of the movie, speed of your computer, etc. Allow the program to run to fruition and be sure that the program is finished. Once encoded transfer the *.AVI file to your PDA. You can open the resulting file with either WMV or BetaPlayer. Stephen, I could not get past the a pop-up screen asking which drive you want to use. It would not allow me to select anything except the.iso(?) file for an previously decrypted dvd. The box for drive was greyed. The DVD I was using was verified not to be encrypted by running DVD Shrink. Any Ideas? TIA

Are you working with a previously ripped ISO file? If so – this will not work. The software has to do the operation “From cradle to grave” for it to work properly. __________________ Dave’s iPAQ: My Mobile Home Away From Home |

Nope, Was trying to rip from a bought DVD of “My Man Godfrey” with William Powell. was doing it as a test. Also set up your two step procedure and it is working well. Have made about 6 PPC movies. I can send you a screen shot of the stoping point with Fair Use if it will help. I just tried to attach a .jpg to this message and failed:-)

Thanks for all your input so far on this… Got 1Gb card Tuesday and was looking for exactly this kinda thing ! Been extremely helpfull.. Tried FUL and not sure if it was something I did or something on the film but it’s creating avi file with subtitles… Not particularly usefull on a 3.5″ screen !!! |

Beware activesync 3.8 Just a warning… The new version of activesync has regained the old aversion to large files… So I’ve had to revert to v3.7.1 which seems to work fine… |

All worked, except for playing it on the PPC! Went through the process, seemed to work well. But after I transfered the file to my ipaq 3115 (which I checked on my pc first–seemed to be functioning), Windows Media Player couldn’t seem to find it, I guess because it’s a .avi. Is there something I have to do to allow it to be played by WMP? Also, when I click it, it launches some random image on my PPC in HP Image Zone app (?). Finally, tried to download BetaPlayer–seems like their site isn’t functioning… Tell me I’m doing something really stupid (and easy to fix) after hours of transfers! Thanks. |

Thanks Stephen, that confirms what I thought. I’ll try betaplayer again as well, but in the meantime, found Pocket DVD (www.pqdvd.com), which also has a solution which may be the best, if you’re willing to spend $32. The reason I say that is because their software converts to a .wmv format, AND it does it in about 5x the speed direct from the DVD. So if you want to use Microsoft’s movie viewer, that is a great way to go. Impressed with quality of picture/sound as well. (But ultimately, I can’t believe that I can use my Tivo to record great movies, get it to my PC, and then down to my little PPC. What an amazing thing!!) Thanks again for the feedback.

I just wanna say thanks. I finally did it. Wanted to watch dvd’s on my ipaq since I bought it on feb. 11 and its april 9th. Thank you so much! I watched my first movie last night and it was great. Well the movie wasn’t that great, but the experience was. |
