Ad-Hock PPC to PPC Messages & Files

Has anyone found a good software package for sending messages and transferring files from one PocketPC to another PocketPC via Wifi without requiring an access point or internet connection. I will be traveling on a ship for 17 days and would like to communicate with an adjacent room. We both have HP iPAQ 4705. Any suggestions?

Supposedly you can use Bluetooth to do this. I have never done it, but I have read about it. It is called Bluejacking. You can Google it.

“Send via Bluetooth” is the option you’re looking for.

as to sending via wifi….i don’t think you could do that as the drivers for the wifi in your ipaq aren’t designed for creating a adhoc connection. keyword think meaning I don’t know for sure, it’s my assumtion.

Actually, ad hoc connections generally use WiFi as the method of transport. You are more likely to obtain a stable connection using WiFi, as BlueTooth is meant to be less than 30feet using “line of sight”. Going through a ship’s bulkhead might cut that down to 10 feet, so WiFi might actually work out better for David737…

I also felt Wifi would have better range. My question was software tools to make an Ad-Hock connection work between to HP iPAQ h4705 PPC. Has anyone gotten Ad-Hock to work between to WM2k3SE PPC on Wifi? Also is there any Ad-Hock IM message software? www.colligo.com has some software for $100 per user that looks good, but $200 is too expensive for “fun” and education. Thanks for any suggestion.

Bluetooth does allow messaging and sending files ad-hoc, but like Elrendhel said, steel bulkhead will dampen your signal.

Take a cheap Access Point with you. You can each access the AP. But, PPC does not have a peer-to-peer ability for PPC. You can connect PPC to Desktop peer-to-peer, but not PPC to PPC. Not sure what to tell you to do.

I have had good success establishing an ad-hoc network/connection with two other WM2002/3 (not SE) units, with lilttle or no fuss.

But then I was also using PocketWinc to assist…

Hi Elrendhel, Thanks for the encouragement. I am using Hudson’s “IP Dashboard” for WiFi network help. I was not smart enough to be able to get Ad-Hock working between two PPC with 2003 installed. We now will both have the 4705 with 2003SE on both. I will down load a trial version of PocketWinc if you think that may help. I am please to add $19.95 per unit to make the Ad-Hock connection work. I will wait a few days until my friend that I will be traveling with is in Denver so we can set up the two systems. If you can remember any special steps you needed to do to get the Ad-Hock working between to PPC I would appreciate specific clues. We tried for two days with our wife’s screaming at us on the last cruise when we were unable to get my iPAQ 5455 working with his Dell PPC with a Socket add on card. We had no luck and two unhappy wives. We plan on success this trip. We both have the same PPC so that should improve the odds. Thanks again for the optimism.

Well, it only costs $19.95 after the initial “trial period”. I would download and give it a try to see if it really does assist you in your endeavors.

The only downside with PocketWinc is that it is becoming more and more apparent that it does not support WPA. If this is an issue, a new utility that I’ve been reviewing called Socket “WiFi Companion” seems to have all of the bases covered. I have not tried this utility specifically for Ad-hoc, but it has a splendid GUI.
