Socket Introduces World’s First V.92 SDIO 56K Modem for Pocket PCs

Socket Communications, Inc., the Mobile Connection(TM) Company, announced availability of its SDIO 56K Modem Card. The Socket SDIO 56K Modem Card transforms a Pocket PC with an SDIO slot into a portable data communications tool, enabling Pocket PC users to access the Internet with any available analog phone line.

As the latest addition to Socket’s modem offerings, the Socket SDIO 56K Modem Card includes new speed and features to provide mobile users a fast and reliable alternative where broadband or Wi-Fi connections are unavailable. The Socket SDIO 56K Modem Card features V.92 technology that boosts upstream data rates between the user and Internet Service Provider (ISP) to reduce upload time for large files and email attachments. V.92 uses higher data compression ratios, which increases the data throughput speed to up to twice as fast as other V.90 only modems.

“As the leader in Mobility Friendly Solutions, Socket is committed to providing next generation connectivity products for handheld devices that are reliable and easy to use,” said Vanessa Lindsay, product marketing manager at Socket Communications. “Whether the SDIO 56K Modem Card is used as a primary modem, or used as backup when Wi-Fi hot spots or high-speed Internet connections are not available, it is an invaluable tool for Pocket PC users that need to stay connected.”

The Socket SD Modem supports a variety of advanced features including Quick Connect, Modem-On-Hold and Caller ID. A V.92 feature, Quick Connect reduces dial-up connection time by up to 50 percent by remembering phone line characteristics and storing them for later use. The modem also automatically signals the Pocket PC whenever incoming calls arrive, allowing the user to answer without dropping the Internet connection. With type-2 Caller ID, the modem displays information for an incoming call if the phone is already connected to another caller.

The modem supports V.44 data compression that allows greater compression of downstream data, particularly HTML, resulting in speeds 20 percent to 40 percent faster than current modems. In addition, the modem features link and data LEDs along with an internal speaker for monitoring connection status.
