Samsung to release a collector’s edition of the SSD 990 Pro in a box inspired by Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

In one of the less extravagant collaborations between computer hardware manufacturers and gaming studios, Samsung has partnered with Japan’s Square Enix. The collaboration aims to promote the upcoming game Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, resulting in the release of the Samsung 990 Pro, a solid-state drive (SSD) with a 2 TB capacity, housed in unique packaging reflecting the game.

The special edition SSD, titled Samsung 990 Pro 2 TB NVMe SSD x FFVII Rebirth, will be supplied in a cardboard box sized 180 × 180 × 175 mm. The packaging will sport logos and images of game characters.

 Special edition SSD

The box contains a regular 2 TB 990 Pro SSD, equipped with a standard cooling radiator supplied for PlayStation 5. Neither the external design nor the technical specifications have seen changes. The SSD is furnished with a 2 GB LPDDR4 cache and promises a sequential read speed of up to 7450 MB/s and sequential write speed up to 6950 MB/s, marking it as one of the fastest PCIe 4.0 standard SSDs on the market.

 Gaming SSD

Nonetheless, besides the packaging, the “special edition” Samsung 990 Pro 2 TB NVMe SSD x FFVII Rebirth offers no additional features. Even the game in question is not included in the package. The only potential purpose for the special SSD packaging could be to serve as a prop for streamers. The Samsung 990 PRO 2 TB NVMe SSD x FFVII Rebirth is expected to hit the market in March.
