Here are the notes… HP iPAQ hx4700 Pocket PC Series ROM Update version 1.10 (9 May 05) » revision history Download This package contains the ROM Update Utility (RUU) and ROM image for the listed handheld models and operating systems. software information Important Note! * IMPORTANT: o The RUU is designed to replace the current ROM image and to erase the partnership and all user data and programs on the handheld. It is important to read and understand the information in the Readme file that is included with this update BEFORE installing the package. Fixes * Fixes issues with wireless connectivity. * Fixes issue with execution of .NET framework. * Fixes issue with very high-volume audio signal from third-party applications that could result in potential speaker damage. * Fixes issue where the microphone automatic gain control (AGC) setting was not saved after a power cycle. * Fixes issue where the user interface for the handheld would indicate that the user was connected to a network that was not present. * Fixes issue where protected extensible authentication protocol (PEAP) authentication would fail with no indication that the user’s password had expired. * Fixes issue where Pocket Internet Explorer would stall and fail to load a page if the HTTP post was larger than 16K. * Fixes issue where WiFi connection status was incorrectly indicated for some conditions. * Fixes issue with an active modem connection where the handheld was unable to re-establish a connection after the USB cable was unplugged. * Fixes issue that occurred when using WPA-PSK authentication where the handheld failed to authenticate to a second access point (AP) with the same SSID and key. * Fixes issue where the client device packets did not properly route to the target LAN when a point-to-point protocol (PPP) connection was made. * Fixes issue where an exception was generated When disconnecting a serial line Internet protocol (SLIP) server session. * Fixes issue where the wrong domain name server (DNS) address was passed to the server when a secondary IP address was assigned. * Fixes issue where the wrong WEP key was used when switching between configured, preferred, WEP-enabled Wi-Fi connections. * Fixes issue with cached pages where a back/forward navigation would not be sent to the Internet. * Fixes issue with URLs that contain semicolons so that they are no longer truncated when sending the GET request over the Wireless Session Protocol. * Fixes the following localization issues: * Korean: Fixes issue with contact picker where it did not match Jungseong because asterisk (*) and pound sign (#) key presses were ignored. * Korean: Fixes issue with contact names that were displayed with no comma or space between the Last and First name. * Korean: Fixes issue with the Notification dialog so it is no longer clipped in the Sounds and Notifications Control panel. * Romanian: Corrects Daylight Savings Time. Enhancements * Provides an improved Microsoft Pocket Internet Explorer. * Provides an improved Microsoft Windows Media Player. * Enables more than one Settings application to be active at the same time. * Adds new data connectivity icon to the Title bar. * Improves ServerSync application stability. * Enables dialing of a number that starts with a pound sign (#). * Enhances localization, including: * Traditional Chinese: Improves Wi-Fi settings “Zero Config” dialog box. * Japan: Improves Wi-Fi settings. * Korean: Updates the Lunar calendar. * Enables the pound sign (#) and asterisk (*) to be used in the Contacts application search function. Prerequisites * Microsoft ActiveSync 3.7.1 (or later) is required. Notes * PURPOSE: o Recommended * OPERATING SYSTEM(S): o Microsoft Windows for Pocket PC 2003 SE * NOTE: o Once the update is complete, the .EXE file downloaded in Step 1 can be deleted, if desired. Installation HOW TO USE: 1. Download the SoftPaq .EXE to a directory on your hard drive. 2. Execute the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions to unpack the ROM update files to a directory. (NOTE: This directory should not contain any file or folder from any previous ROM upgrade.) 3. Establish an Activesync connection between the handheld and host PC using the USB connection. 4. The ROM Update Utility (hpRUU.exe) will start automatically. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the ROM upgrade. INSTALLATION NOTES: 5. During the update, the ROM Update Utility will: – Query the handheld for current ROM image information. – Validate that the new ROM image is compatible with the handheld. – Automatically place the handheld in Flash mode. – Update the ROM image on the handheld. 6. IMPORTANT: Disable the Standby and Hibernation modes on the host PC. If Standby or Hibernation mode is activated during the upgrade process, a critical error may occur. 7. IMPORTANT: Plan enough time to complete the update. The total time to perform this ROM update is estimated at 20 minutes with a USB connection. 8. IMPORTANT: Do not interact with the handheld or remove it from AC power or the cradle/cable once the status bar appears on the handheld and the actual update has started. 9. If an error message is displayed during the update process, follow any available instructions to correct the condition and start the ROM Update Utility again. 10. If the host PC is running the Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition (SE) or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (ME) Operating System and the ROM update process is interrupted, the host PC may need to be restarted. 11. BTW, the upgrade applied fine on my HX4705. I am still reloading applications, but so far there have been no problems with my initial sync. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are working better so far. __________________ |

That does look odd wolfprince79. Maybe the person that posted it likes Yoda-speak. 1.10 is the new file. The ROM update will erase the iPaq File Store and main memory, so after the first sync all software that you want to keep will need to be reinstalled. As a precaution when I did my update, I backed up my “My Documents” area to one of my SD cards, took both the SD and CF card out of the HX4700, then I hard reset the unit myself before I applied the upgrade. I did this because I was pretty low on iPaq File Store available space.
As Jack and others have written before, this is a good time to re-evaluate the software and data you have loaded since it’s all going to get wiped out anyway. There are definitely a few programs that I am not going to reinstall this time around. __________________ |

Along the same lines—If you had backed up everything with iPAQ Backup to sd card —I am presuming you would be able to restore everything that was presently on the ipaq—? |

I think restoring an iPaq backup from the old ROM revision would be dangerous, since it possibly could mess up the registry. Others that are more experienced will know for sure.
After I applied the update, I did an initial sync to get my addresses, appointments, etc. back on the unit. Now, I am reinstalling the software I want from its original media. I did not restore a backup. __________________ |

wolfprince79 maybe onto something here. I just downloaded the upgrade ROM and installed it. The upgrade progressed without a problem and finished When I had a look at Media Player I noticed that it was still version 9 and not version 10 as it had been stated in a previous post. Further investigation and looking at the HP Asset Viewer indicates that my ROM version is Ver. 1.00.09 ENG and not Ver. 1.10. The ROM date also show 09/02/04 I would image this should reflect the new date of the upgraded ROM If I run the ROM upgrade installer program again it shows my current ROM is 1.00.09 and it will upgrade it to the same version. Unfortunately I didn’t pay to much attention to this when I first did the upgrade! Has anyone else who’s performed the upgrade found the same thing? It’s rather annoying that I’ve just blown away my Ipaq for no reason, and I now have to reinstall everything just to blown it away again with the new ROM upgrade.

It would appear that HP has multiple download sites that have different ROM updates on them. Looking through the HP forums the following site has a different service pack
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/f…load/22658.html This site has a service pack of SP29841 where as the site detailed in the first post has SP29741. I have now downloaded and installed this pack and it is the correct one. So anyone out there who is going to perform the upgrade, make sure the service pack you download is the SP29841. |

Great info you guys !! – I’m waiting it out so that you can sort out all the problems for me 🙂 You shouldn’t restore from a backup that was made before the ROM upgrade. Instead sync to PC prior to upgrade. Then sync back from PC after upgrade. It’s really easy to reinstall your programs thru Activesync – it keeps all the info it needs to reinstall.

Hi Elrendhel You have specified the wrong service pack in you step-by-step guide, it should be SP29841not SP29741
Also your satement – 2.) HP iPAQ Audio Driver Update SP30215.EXE Version 1.00 (14 Apr 05) – should not be required anymore as it’s now included in the ROM upgrade. |

Most of the programs that I have in file store are whited out in active sync add/remove,so I doubt that I could reinstall them that way |
