“An Extremely Difficult Decision”: Mad Max and Just Cause Creators Cut 9% of Staff and Close Two Divisions

Swedish Avalanche Studios Group Closes Two Branches, Reduces Workforce

Swedish videogame development company, Avalanche Studios Group, renowned for creating games such as Mad Max, Rage 2, and the Just Cause series, has announced the closure of two of its five offices and a reduction of approximately 50 employees. This workforce reduction accounts for 9% of the company’s overall personnel, as elaborated in an official statement on the studio’s website.

Future Outlook for Avalanche Studios Group

Company branches in New York and Montreal, established in June 2022 and October 2023 respectively, are scheduled for shutdown. In explaining its decision, the company’s leadership stated it was an “extremely difficult decision” and was necessary to ensure a “stable and sustainable future“. Following this strategic move, Avalanche plans to retain its offices in Stockholm, Malmö, and Liverpool.

In addition to these changes, Avalanche Studios Group is currently working on Contraband, a cooperative shooter game. There has been limited news about the game since 2021. Jez Corden, editor of Windows Central, recently reported that the team encountered several obstacles, including the departure of key specialists.

New Projects in the Works

Avalanche Studios Group, the creator of Just Cause and Mad Max, made headlines in April of this year when they revealed plans for a state-of-the-art AAA open-world third-person game. The news leaked via a job posting for a lead animator.
