Arm and Samsung Collaborate to Optimize Processor Development Tools for 2-nm Technology

Samsung Joins Forces with Arm to Optimize Chip Development for 2nm Process

South Korean firm Samsung Electronics is striving to surpass rival TSMC in the arena of contracted chip manufacturing by expediting the implementation of new lithographic standards. Their recent partnership with Arm Ltd. aims to simplify processor development for Arm’s clients, enabling Samsung to produce these chips using a 2-nanometer (nm) manufacturing process.

According to TechPowerUp, the collaboration between Arm and Samsung aims to facilitate a wide array of market solutions, from server processors and artificial intelligence accelerators to mobile components, including chiplet layout options. As a result of this successful partnership, clients of both companies will find it easier to manufacture processors with Cortex-X and Cortex-A architectures that are designed for Samsung’s 2nm technology. The South Korean firm’s previous use of the MBCFET transistor structure for its 3nm technology makes the implementation of Gate-All-Around (GAA) transistors in the 2nm process less risky.

Arm has also been collaborating with other contract manufacturers in this field. For instance, the company was recently involved in the preparation of 64-core Faraday Technology processors featuring the Arm Neoverse architecture, set to be manufactured under Intel’s 18A process. Arm has previously collaborated with Intel on this technology and the development of the necessary ecosystem. The announcement for this partnership was made in April last year. The collaboration with Samsung is a logical step for Arm to create a conducive environment for processor developers seeking to use advanced technologies offered by leading contract manufacturers.
