Better Late Than Never: Steam Database Reveals Official Mod Support Will Eventually Come to Doom Eternal

Doom Eternal Awaits Mod Support; Revealed in Steam’s Database Update

In 2018, developer id Software announced plans to provide mod support for their hellish first person shooter game, Doom Eternal, at its grand reveal. Since then, nothing happened in that regard until it seems, now the time has arrived.

Mod Support, A “Long-Term Initiative”

Marty Stratton, the head of id Software, described mod support as a “long-term initiative” during the Doom Eternal announcement at QuakeCon 2018. The studio was prepared to discuss it in the “not-too-distant future” according to Stratton’s statement.

One and a half years after those statements, in March 2020, Doom Eternal was released. Over the course of nearly four years since the launch (with another anniversary coming up next week), the game has received two story add-ons but no mod support.

Proof in the Steam Database

An observant Reddit user, theonlychemo, noticed an indicator in Steam’s unofficial database (SteamDB) suggesting mod support for Doom Eternal is soon to arrive.

The behind-the-scenes update of Doom Eternal (details can be viewed on SteamDB’s page) mentions ModPortal (Mod Portal) and the executable file (DOOMModPortal.exe) required to launch it.

This mention in the update does not guarantee an immediate announcement. However, with Doom Eternal’s anniversary just around the corner on March 20th, the game’s fans would most likely appreciate the addition of mod support as a gift.

Doom Eternal is available on platforms including PC (Steam), PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, and Nintendo Switch. Amid community pressure, the anti-cheat Denuvo was removed from the game in May 2020, followed by the removal of anti-piracy protection in September 2023.
