In recent interviews with IGN and Eurogamer, FromSoftware president and Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki unveiled fresh details about their newly announced expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree.
Highlights of the Expansion
Miyazaki affirms that Shadow of the Erdtree will be FromSoftware’s largest expansion to date. It will encompass a map as large as Tamogilje, if not larger. Additional highlights include another poison swamp, more than 10 boss characters, and eight new types of weaponry.
In terms of setting, Shadow of the Erdtree takes place in the Lands of Shadows which exist within the same universe as Middle-earth. The lands are physically separated due to in-story circumstances, with access via a cocoon in the Mogwin Palace.
Similar Experience in Terms of Structure and Difficulty
Miyazaki further adds that Shadow of the Erdtree offers a similar gaming experience as the primary game in terms of structure (open locations, story-related, and optional dungeons) and challenge.
“Our more hardcore players can uncover optional bosses like Malenia, which you may remember from the main game,” Miyazaki hinted.
Future of Elden Ring
When questioned about a potential Elden Ring 2 or a second DLC, Miyazaki did not deny the possibility of further developments but he added that there were no concrete plans at this stage.
Shadow of the Erdtree will be available for purchase from June 21 for PC through Steam, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S. Along with the release date, the gameplay trailer for the DLC was also unveiled.
