Elon Musk promises to release the source code for the chatbot xAI Grok this week.

Elon Musk’s Startup xAI to Release Grok Chatbot Source Code

Billionaire Elon Musk’s clash over humanitarian values in artificial intelligence with the founders of OpenAI has yielded unexpected consequences. The Musk-owned startup, xAI, has promised to open-source its Grok chatbot this week. Interestingly, private users can access the chatbot for $16 per month.

The Trend Towards Transparency

Upon the release of Grok’s source code, xAI will join a growing list of companies that have already done so. Notable among these is the Russian-banned company Meta Platforms, founded by Mark Zuckerberg. France’s Mistral startup has also signed on to the open-source movement, making its chatbot code freely accessible.

Musk’s Drive for Open Access

Elon Musk has long advocated for open access to developments made by his companies. Several Tesla patents have been available for public use since 2014, albeit with practical restrictions. This move was driven by Tesla’s ambition to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles. Last year, Musk’s social network, X, revealed portions of its algorithm’s source code. The xAI startup, specializing in generative artificial intelligence systems, is now following suit.
