Gift for the 10th Anniversary: Modder Breaks 60 FPS Barrier in Dark Souls 2 Without Breaking the Game

As Dark Souls 2, the intense action role-playing game by FromSoftware, celebrates its 10th anniversary, modder emoose has gifted PC gaming community with an opportunity to play the game unrestricted, at 60 frames per second (fps).

Many operations and functions in FromSoftware’s games are tied to the frame rate. Any attempt to exceed the set maximum value results in a multitude of issues.

In the case of Dark Souls 2, any acceleration beyond 60fps led to weapons deteriorating too quickly, characters moving unusually fast, and disruptions in cloth physics and animated textures, like water surfaces.

On March 13th, emoose launched a mod, DS2FrameUnlimiter for the Scholar of the First Sin edition, which allows gamers to enjoy the game at 120, 144 fps, and even higher, without having to deal with the stated issues.

While the modification is still in its “beta” stage and currently only supports offline mode: emoose is not yet certain how the increased frames per second will impact the multiplayer experience and is not willing to take risks.

To install the mod, place xinput1_3.dll and DS2FrameUnlimiter.ini files from the archive in the game directory, and edit the latter. emoose suggests making a backup of your game saves in advance.

Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin was released in 2015 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Despite receiving the highest ratings in the series, the game is considered its worst part — something Hidetaka Miyazaki disagrees with.
