Gigabyte has pushed the limits with NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 4070 Super card by equipping their GeForce RTX 4070 Super Aorus Master model with a massive four-slot cooler and increasing its maximum power limit to 350 watts, outdoing NVIDIA’s standard 240 watts.
The official specifications of NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Super card indicate a power consumption of 220 watts, 20 watts higher than the original RTX 4070, with a maximum power limit of 240 watts. According to TechPowerUp, non-reference versions of the card tested from Palit Jetstream and Gigabyte AORUS Master exhibited a TDP (Thermal Design Power) of 245 watts, slightly exceeding NVIDIA’s maximum for the Founders Edition.
TechPowerUp reveals that non-reference GeForce RTX 4070 cards usually have a power limit ranging from 242 to 255 watts. However, the Gigabyte RTX 4070 Super Aorus Master boasts a maximum TDP of 350 watts, a staggering 59% increase over the standard 220 watts.
Despite the substantial power capacity that could be utilized for additional overclocking, the card failed to reach a power consumption of 350 watts under normal usage. In games, it usually clocks up to 246 watts, 28 watts above the Founders Edition’s consumption. Achieving the full 350-watts power limit requires extreme overclocking that would exceed the capability of the standard four-slot cooling system. The maximum peak power consumption for Gigabyte’s card was observed at 290 watts during brief spikes.
Impressively, Gigabyte’s RTX 4070 Super Aorus Master comes with a humongous cooling system. Stretching 340mm in length and occupying four open slots in a PC case, this is metaphorically a ‘cool’ factor that competes with the Founders Edition’s cooling performance, outdoing it by 15-degree Celsius.
Out of the box, the Gigabyte RTX 4070 Super Aorus Master is only 2-3% slower than the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti and 4-5% faster than the RTX 4070 Super Founders Edition. This is largely thanks to significant factory overclocking. The chip runs in Boost mode at a frequency of 2655 MHz, surpassing NVIDIA’s Founders Edition, which boasts a Boost frequency of 2475 MHz. Even with additional manual overclocking, which can increase the performance by up to 7% according to 3DMark tests, Gigabyte’s version does not consume the declared 350 watts maximum power limit.
Unsurprisingly, the Gigabyte RTX 4070 Super Aorus Master will be one of the most expensive versions of the RTX 4070 Super on the market, with a US price tag of $700. Though $100 above NVIDIA’s suggested price, it is creeping close to the price of the most affordable versions of RTX 4070 Ti. However, as the RTX 4070 Ti is soon to be discontinued and replaced by the RTX 4070 Ti Super, priced at $799, Gigabyte’s offering might look attractive comparatively.
