Initially oriented towards the Chinese Market, AMD’s widely known Radeon RX 7900 GRE video cards are now expanding to reach European and other Asian markets. Preparing for this expansion, Gigabyte is set to release its own version of the Radeon RX 7900 GRE, adopting the design of the previously released Radeon RX 7800 XT Gaming model.
The Radeon RX 7900 GRE comprises a cut-down Navi 31 XL graphics processor with 80 compute units on the RDNA 3 architecture, equivalent to 5120 stream processors. In the boost mode, it can overclock to 2245 MHz, with a base operating frequency of 1880 MHz. Compared to this, the Radeon RX 7900 XT uses a graphics chip with 84 compute units and 5376 stream processors. The RX 7900 GRE model offers 16 GB of GDDR6 video memory and a 256-bit bus, while the Radeon RX 7900 XT offers 20 GB of memory with a 320-bit bus.
The Navi 31 XL chip, smaller in area compared to the Navi 31 XT used in the RX 7900 XT model, is fully compatible with the graphics cards for GPU Navi 32, for example, the RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT. Interestingly, the power consumption of the RX 7900 GRE is slightly lower at 260 watts compared to that of the RX 7800 XT at 263 watts. This allows AMD partners to utilise existing cooling systems used in earlier, lower-end models for the Radeon RX 7900 GRE.
Gigabyte has not yet disclosed the specifications of its version of the Radeon RX 7900 GRE. However, it appears that the card will have some additional factory overclocking of the graphics processor.
