MediaTek becomes the largest supplier of mobile processors worldwide

In their recent report, research firm Canalys revealed a breakdown of the smartphone market for the fourth quarter of 2023, segmented by processor vendors. The report shows that during this period, more devices were sold with MediaTek processors than any other—an impressive 21% increase from the previous year.

In terms of revenue during Q4 2023, Apple emerged as the leader. Smartphones fitted with the company’s processors—solely the iPhone—brought in $87 billion in revenue, marking a 20% increase from the same period in the previous year. The report, focusing only on the October-December period, doesn’t provide full-year figures. The top mobile processor vendors for the period were MediaTek, Apple, and Qualcomm.

Huawei’s division, HiSilicon, reported earnings of $7 billion and 7 million units shipped. These figures suggest that the Chinese tech giant sold its nova 12 and Mate 60 Pro phones with the Kirin 9000S chip on average at $1000 per device. Sales of phones with Unisoc chips showcased a 24% increase in revenue and units sold, half of which was made up of Transsion products, marketed under the Infinix, Tecno, and iTel brands.

Meanwhile, Samsung recorded a 48% reduction in phones shipped with Exynos chips, and its Q4 revenue for this division fell to $5 billion—44% less than the previous year. In the first half of 2024, minor growth is expected owing to Samsung Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ powered by the Exynos 2400 chip, while the Exynos 1480-powered Galaxy A55 is due for release by the end of the month.
