Qualcomm Introduces Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 Processor for AR Headsets – Up to 20% Faster Than Its Predecessor

Qualcomm Introduces Upgraded AR Chipset

Global tech company Qualcomm has unveiled the enhanced version of its single-chip platform, termed the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2. This latest model is designed specifically for augmented reality (AR) devices and provides a notable speed upgradation from its predecessor, named the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2, launched last year.

Enhanced Visual Support

The new chipset’s most significant upgrade lies in its improved visual support. The XR2+ Gen 2 offers a resolution of up to 4.3K per eye at a 90 Hz frequency or 3.7K at a refresh rate of 120 Hz. According to Qualcomm, this enables sharper visuals in applications such as room displays, large overlays, and virtual desktops. In comparison, the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2, used in Meta’s Quest 3 VR headset, supports a resolution of just 3.1K per eye at 90 Hz or 2.7K at 120 Hz.

Faster CPU and GPU Frequencies

Qualcomm asserts the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 also boosts CPU and GPU frequencies by 20% and 15%, respectively, compared to the XR2 Gen 2. Importantly, the chipset supports the simultaneous functioning of over 12 cameras for tracking movements of hands and other body parts. Other specifications of the XR2+ Gen 2 remain unchanged from the XR2 Gen 2.

Upcoming Products with XR2+ Gen 2

In its press release, Qualcomm revealed that over five manufacturers are currently developing products based on the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 platform. These include future AR devices by tech giants Samsung and Google, new VR headsets from HTC Vive, Immersed Visor, and Chinese firm YVR.
