Samsung Announces SD Express MicroSD Cards, Faster Than SATA SSD.

Samsung has announced the delivery commencement of the SD Express microSD cards with a capacity of 256 gigabytes (Gb) featuring high read speeds up to 800 megabytes per second (Mb/s). Alongside, the company has also started massive production of 1 terabyte (Tb) UHS-1 interface microSD cards.

Comparing Old and New Technologies

The company reported that traditional microSD cards with UHS-1 interfaces typically provide a read speed of 104 Mb/s. For SD Express cards, the sequential reading speed was increased to 985 Mb/s, but such products were unavailable commercially until recently.

New SD Cards Rival SATA SSD

Thanks to the support of the PCIe 3.0 x1 interface, Samsung’s latest SD Express microSD cards are able to compete with SATA SSDs. Their sequential read speed reaches 800 Mb/s, which is 1.4 times faster than regular SATA III interface SSDs (up to 560 Mb/s). This speed is also more than four times faster than the most efficient UHS-1 interface memory cards (up to 200 Mb/s). The latest Samsung SD Express microSD cards use the Samsung Dynamic Thermal Guard technology to enhance performance and reliability by optimizing operating temperature under prolong loads.

1 Tb MicroSD Card Hits Mass Production

The recently-launched 1 Tb Samsung SD microSD UHS-1 memory cards consist of eight 1-tb V-NAND 8th generation memory layers. These memory cards go through rigorous durability checks during manufacture and are equipped with six protective features: water-resistance, ability to withstand extreme temperatures, drop resistance, wear and tear resistance, X-ray shield protection, and magnetic protection.

Availability

The latest 256 Gb Samsung SD Express microSD cards with read speeds up to 800 Mb/s are scheduled to hit the market later this year. The delivery of the 1 Tb Samsung SD microSD UHS-1 memory cards is expected to start in the third quarter of 2024.
