SMC Offers Wireless Travel Kit

IRVINE, Calif.—SMC Networks, leading provider of networking solutions for the SMB/e and all the way home, today announced its newest offering for travelers and SOHO users, the EZ Connect g 2.4GHz 802.11g Wireless Traveler’s Kit.

Available this month, the new Wireless Traveler’s Kit brings unparalleled flexibility to road warriors and SOHO users. Packing everything a traveler needs to convert a wired hotel broadband or visiting office connection for wireless connection in a convenient, easy-to-carry case, the new Traveler’s Kit includes a USB cable, a Cat5 Ethernet cable, a power cord and the industry’s first All-in-One networking device that can operate in any of five different modes: Access Point, Ethernet Bridge, Repeater, Point-to-Point Bridge or Point-to-Multipoint Bridge. At an MSRP of just $99.99, the new SMC EZ Connect g Wireless Traveler’s Kit makes wireless networking affordably easy on the road, at home and in the office.

The perfect business traveler’s companion, the new EZ Connect g 802.11g Wireless Traveler’s Kit makes it possible to take advantage of a wireless-equipped notebook computer even where only wired connections are offered. Connected to a wired hotel broadband connection, the SMCWTK-G becomes a Personal Access Point that gives a traveling user the flexibility to leave the desk to check e-mail or surf the Internet from the couch, or even from bed. Back at home or in the office, the same device can be used as an Ethernet Bridge that instantly converts any Ethernet device — gaming console, printer, set-top box, point-of-sale terminal, desktop or laptop computer — into a wireless network device. And it doesn’t require that drivers be installed. All a user needs to do is plug it into the Ethernet port of any Ethernet device with the included Cat5 cable and that device becomes wireless, giving users the freedom to locate printers where they’re most needed, play multiplayer networked games and more — without messy wiring. And because it can be powered via either standard electrical outlet or USB, simplicity and placement flexibility are enhanced even further.

An easy and convenient way to expand a wireless local area network, the new SMCWTK-G can also be configured as a Repeater. Its built-in support for Wireless Distribution System (WDS) facilitates connection of 802.11b and/or 802.11g clients to the wireless network and extends the coverage of a home or office WLAN. The Repeater capability of SMCWTK-G forwards the wireless signal between a wireless client and another SMCWTK-G that is connected to the wired network, extending the range of an existing wireless network and overcoming obstacles that block wireless signals.

Further enhancing its flexibility, the unit’s Point-to-Point and Point-to-Multipoint Bridging functions make it a great solution for connecting multiple networks. Whether to connect a network in the garage to the main house, or to connect a small office to its warehouse, all it takes is an SMCWTK-G at each end.

Plug-and-Play and platform independent, the SMCWTK-G can be easily installed, too, via the included easy-to-use EZ-Installation Wizard. To ensure secure transmissions across the wireless network, users can enable its 64/128-bit Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP), Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA), MAC address filtering, and can disable SSID broadcast.

The EZ Connect g 2.4GHz 802.11g Wireless Traveler’s Kit (SMCWTK-G) is available in August, at an MSRP of $99.99, and is backed by SMC’s limited lifetime warranty.
