Wolcen Studios, the French developer behind Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem, has reached out to its community for the first time in several months. The announcement reveals the future of the fantasy action RPG, often compared to Diablo.
Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem initially debuted on Steam Early Access on March 24, 2016. By February 2020, it had reached version 1.0, and in March 2023, was launched on consoles including PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S.
Throughout its development, Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem received numerous small and large updates. The most recent one named Endgame was in March of the other year. Despite these updates, Wolcen Studios admits they could not resolve the game’s fundamental issues.
In a statement, Wolcen Studios explained that insurmountable technical difficulties have risen during updates. These challenges stem from the game’s architectural foundations chosen during early stages of production.
The only way to overcome these barriers would be to completely overhaul the game’s technical aspect. As a result, Wolcen Studios has decided to cease the development and support of the project. Online modes will be discontinued from September 3, although the single-player mode will remain functional. The game will also receive an indefinite discount.
The developers affirmed their decision, “This decision will allow us to focus on new projects, putting the lessons learned in Wolcen to good use. We aim high and hope to see you in the new worlds we create”.
In conclusion, the developers extended their gratitude to players for their support: “Together, we can move forward fearlessly, dive into new adventures, and aim for the highest quality achievements.”
