Widespread and Prolonged Outage Reported in Telegram’s Operation

Global Technical Glitch Hits Telegram

The popular messaging app, Telegram, has experienced a massive technical failure that disrupted its service worldwide. Users have reported difficulties in sending messages, uploading media files, and updates on channels, with the malfunction persisting for roughly one and a half hours.

According to an announcement by the Centre for Network Monitoring and Management of General Use (CNMMGP), the first reports of Telegram malfunctions started coming in after 21:00 Moscow time. Users from Russia, Belarus, and other countries complained about being unable to send messages and lack of updates in Telegram channels. Both the Telegram mobile app and its web version were affected.

Breakdown of Reported Issues

Based on information from Downdetector, more than 68% of the reported issues with Telegram were related to sending messages. Moscow and the Moscow Region accounted for 25% of the complaints, with an additional 14% originating from Saint Petersburg and the Leningrad Region.

Telecom Operators Response

Representatives of Russian telecom operators MTS, Tele2, Beeline and Megafon stated that their networks were operating normally. Megafon observed only a reduction in traffic from Telegram’s side. As of now, the service Downradar has counted more than a thousand complaints worldwide, with most complaints coming from Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Krasnodar, as well as from Belarus.

Slow Recovery and Strange Side-Effects

As of 23:00, Telegram’s functionality began to slowly recover, although all issues have not been fully resolved. An interesting “side effect” of the outage was the appearance of old messages in dialogues, such as those sent about two months ago.

It’s worth noting that the last major malfunction in Telegram occurred on April 2, 2022, with most complaints originating from Moscow. The reasons for the current breakdown and the timeline for full recovery of Telegram’s services have not been specified. We will continue to monitor the situation.
