USB-IF Releases USB Series ”A” Plug Form Factor Guideline 1.0

The USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) today announced a new guideline for next generation storage applications. The guideline, Series “A” Plug Form Factor Guideline 1.0, enables developers to build small-size, high-speed storage devices with large storage capacity. The guideline is fully compliant to the USB 2.0 specification, which enables data transfer rates of up to 480 Mb/s. The guideline provides a standard to which developers can build new storage devices and was developed by the cable and connector work group within the USB-IF. It is a new mechanical form factor that defines a total length of 1.25 inches for products based on the Series “A” Plug guideline; no device electronics are defined. The new guideline will allow compliant products to attach to any USB A-compliant host receptacles currently in production.

“Consumers are very comfortable with USB technology; it is the defacto standard for personal connectivity of PCs, and it has migrated heavily into CE and mobile segments. Memory card technologies are prolific — the USB-IF wants to give consumers an easy solution,” said Jeff Ravencraft, president and chairman of the USB-IF. “This new guideline allows manufacturers to continue to deliver what consumers want.”
